I would've died that day if not for you. I would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes. I would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands. I would have left this life believing that all humans don't care Believing there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted, skin that isn't flea bitten, good food and enough of it, beds to sleep on, someone to love me, to show me I deserve love just because I exist. Your kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands Your big heart saved me... You saved me from the terror of the pound, Soothing away the memories of my old life. You have taught me what it means to be loved. I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me. I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair Why you do it When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter Make just a little more room...to save one more like me. I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes In the best way I know how Reminding you why you go on trying. I am the reason The dogs before me are the reason As are the ones who come after. Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given We would die if not for you. Author Unknown
Dear Mom And Dad, I Died Today. You Got Tired Of Me And Took Me To The Shelter. They Were Overcrowded And I Drew An Unlucky Number. I Am In A Black Plastic Bag In A Landfill Now. Some Other Puppy Will Get The Barely Used Leash You Left. My Collar Was Dirty And Too Small, But The Lady Took It Off Before She Sent Me To The Rainbow Bridge. Would I Still Be At Home If I Hadn't Chewed Your Shoe? I Didn't Know What It Was, But It Was Leather, And It Was On The Floor. I Was Just Playing. You Forgot To Get Puppy Toys. Would I Still Be At Home If I Had Been Housebroken? Rubbing My Nose In What I Did Only Made Me Ashamed That I Had To Go At All. There Are Books And Obedience Teachers That Would Have Taught You How To Teach Me To Go To The Door. Would I Still Be At Home If I Hadn't Brought Fleas Into The House? Without Anti Flea Medicine, I Couldn't Get Them Off Of Me After You Left Me In The Yard For Days. Would I Still Be At Home If I Hadn't Barked? I Was Only Saying "I'm Scared I'm Lonely, I'm Here! I'm Here!" I Want To Be Your Best Friend. Would I Still Be At Home If I Made You Happy? Hitting Me Didn't Make Me Learn How. Would I Still Be At Home If You Had Taken The Time To Care For Me And To Teach Manners To Me? You Didn't Pay Attention To Me After The First Week Or So, But I Spent All My Time Waiting For You To Love Me. I Died Today. Love, Your Puppy
A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old). Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that , so they don't have to stay as long' Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Remember, if a dog were the teacher you would learn things like: * When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. * Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. * Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy. * Take naps. * Stretch before rising. * Run, romp, and play daily. * Thrive on attention and let people touch you. * Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. * On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. * On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. * When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body. * Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. * Be loyal. * Never pretend to be something you're not. * If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. * When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
