Our Featured Pets...Baby Kitty Floyd and Puppy Hank

Please consider fostering a cat or kitten - the very slow adoption rate has hindered us taking in any more. As well there are 15 living in cat shelter environments because we do not have an actual foster home for all of the cats - they are so deserving of their own foster or adoptive home.............email petrescue@hurontel.on.ca for more details /

We have many wonderful dogs including: I am sad to say we STILL have one dog that we took in many from a mennonite breeder who was going to shoot them all January of 2008.

  • Violet - 2 yr old jack russell/bischon that look like purebred rough coats. Violet is sadly very much still backwards. She is fostered near Exeter. She was not sociaized with anyone or anything. She lived in a barn and never seen daylight.

  • Roman - is a shepherd/collie - fostered with teens, a cat, and dogs. He is fostered in Goderich.

  • Tessa is a female shepherd mix - she is believed to be a littermate of the male shepherd mix Jake, she also came from the walkerton vet pound. She is now fostered in Wingham.

  • Lucy is yet another female from the walkerton vet pound - she is very sweet and calm.

Our Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky dogs- Just about on our 10th anniversary (February of 2008) of rescuing all local pound dogs - we were made aware of the plight of the U.S. dogs - so now in addition to continuing to helping all the local pound dogs - we are also helping the U.S. dogs that we can - as space as allows - as we do not believe that innocent dogs should die due to their citizenship.

  • Rascal - is a very friendly and loyal boy - sadly he has not found a loyal owner himself - and is still waiting for his forever home.

  • Stonie - is a smart border collie, very sweet, and good with other dogs, thinks cats are play toys. He is a nice boy. He is fostered in Kitchener.

  • Hugh is a strong minded boy who needs a person as influential as he is.

  • Ava is a cute maltese mix - she is 1-2 years old.

  • Luke is a german shorthair pointer, liver and white - had loser owners and ended up in a kill shelter.

Charlie is a cute choc lab and border collie mix - he lives with kids, cats and dogs.

Daisy is a sweet blue merle sheltie and aussie girl - she lives with dogs , cats and horses.

Keanu is a good looking siberian husky who lives with kids.

Hank is a friendly and strikingly good looking boy - he has a broken leg and will not be ready for adoption until 2010.

Mallory is a very well behaved girl looking for her forever home.

Cody is a darling little boy who lives with kids, cats and dogs.

    The Reason...why we rescue

To you, from all your rescue dogs...

I would've died that day if not for you. I would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes. I would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands. I would have left this life believing that all humans don't care Believing there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted, skin that isn't flea bitten, good food and enough of it, beds to sleep on, someone to love me, to show me I deserve love just because I exist. Your kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands Your big heart saved me... You saved me from the terror of the pound, Soothing away the memories of my old life. You have taught me what it means to be loved. I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me. I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair Why you do it When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter Make just a little more room...to save one more like me. I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes In the best way I know how Reminding you why you go on trying. I am the reason The dogs before me are the reason As are the ones who come after. Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given We would die if not for you.

    Dear Mom And Dad,

    I Died Today.

You Got Tired Of Me And Took Me To The Shelter. They Were Overcrowded And I Drew An Unlucky Number.

I Am In A Black Plastic Bag In A Landfill Now. Some Other Puppy Will Get The Barely Used Leash You Left. My Collar Was Dirty And Too Small, But The Lady Took It Off Before She Sent Me To The Rainbow Bridge.

Would I Still Be At Home If I Hadn't Chewed Your Shoe? I Didn't Know What It Was, But It Was Leather, And It Was On The Floor. I Was Just Playing. You Forgot To Get Puppy Toys.

Would I Still Be At Home If I Had Been Housebroken? Rubbing My Nose In What I Did Only Made Me Ashamed That I Had To Go At All. There Are Books And Obedience Teachers That Would Have Taught You How To Teach Me To Go To The Door.

Would I Still Be At Home If I Hadn't Brought Fleas Into The House? Without Anti Flea Medicine, I Couldn't Get Them Off Of Me After You Left Me In The Yard For Days.

Would I Still Be At Home If I Hadn't Barked? I Was Only Saying "I'm Scared I'm Lonely, I'm Here! I'm Here!" I Want To Be Your Best Friend. Would I Still Be At Home If I Made You Happy? Hitting Me Didn't Make Me Learn How.

Would I Still Be At Home If You Had Taken The Time To Care For Me And To Teach Manners To Me? You Didn't Pay Attention To Me After The First Week Or So, But I Spent All My Time Waiting For You To Love Me.

    I Died Today.

    Love, Your Puppy

A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old). Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that , so they don't have to stay as long' Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Remember, if a dog were the teacher you would learn things like: * When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. * Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. * Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy. * Take naps. * Stretch before rising. * Run, romp, and play daily. * Thrive on attention and let people touch you. * Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. * On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. * On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. * When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body. * Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. * Be loyal. * Never pretend to be something you're not. * If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. * When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

  • Pet Rescue is a local volunteer run, private rescue without an office, a dog shelter, or paid staff. We are not subsidized or funded by anyone. People often mistake us as being affiliated with the SPCA and other groups. However, we raise all funds ourselves to pay for the care of the animals.

We pick up the unclaimed, homeless and discarded animals from vet clinic pounds after the vet clinic has allowed the 3 days for them to be claimed by their owners. Some clinics allow the animal extra time to find a home, but if they are unsuccessful, then they call us and have us take the animal so it is not euthanized. We cover hundreds of kilometers from Zurich, Exeter, Seaforth, Clinton, Goderich, Ripley, Kincardine, Southampton, Walkerton, Hanover, Paisley and Durham, among others.

We spay or neuter each animal six months of age or older, plus vaccinate, deworm, treat for parasites, (and booster), pre-adoption. If the animal is too young to be fixed at time of adoption we offer a spay or neuter rebate. We provide all necessary emergency care, grooming, and even blood test for Aids and Leukemia in the male cats which are more likely to have been injured while trying to fend for themselves during a fight. We buy their food, collars and any other necessities they require.

WE DO NOT EUTHANIZE DUE TO LACK OF SPACE OR INTEREST, and in fact have taken in many animals from humane societies and other rescues when they were about to euthanize for those very reasons.

WE KEEP ALL ANIMALS UNTIL A COMPATIBLE AND PERMANENT HOME IS FOUND!

Our average vet bill per month (with 50 animals, not 75+) was over $2000.00, not including food and supplies.

The majority of our cats are in foster homes but some to reside at K-9 Kitty Kennel's, near Goderich/Bayfield, in the boarding rooms for cats, or are in our cat shelter near Lucknow.

There are many persons ready to do what is right because in their hearts they know it is right. But they hesitate, waiting for the other fellow to make the make the first move -- and he, in turn, waits for you. - Marian Anderson

The advantage of adopting thru a private rescue...

Our cats and kittens are socialized and played with on a daily basis. They do not live in tiny cages. Our dogs and pups are fostered in individual foster homes, they enjoy walks and playtime with their fosterparents and their pets. When you meet one of our animals, even if they have just came into our care, they are much more at ease than they would be living in a noisy pound, where they get minimal playtime, bathroom breaks and socialization. Our foster parents & volunteers ensure we know as much about the animals as we can, considering they are often strays.

The monetary advantage of adopting thru a private rescue...

We exceed the standards of veterinary care provided by the majority of other shelters and rescues, for what is provided to the pet waiting for an adoptive home. Unlike many other places - we provide veterinary care right away - not after the pet is spoken for. We spay or neuter if over 6 months of age, we vaccinate, and even booster if in our care 3-4 weeks from the initial vaccine. Additionally, we have the dogs vaccinated with lepto and the cats with leukemia. If we get a stray male cat in, then the vet does fel. leuk testing to ensure the pet is not a carrier. We deworm with top quality Drontal Plus. We parasite treat with Revolution. We feed them quality food. We provide them with Spectra collar and a pet rescue i.d. tag, for being reunited with us, in the event they are lost.**

Yet the adoption fee for Ontario dogs is a mere $200 (with 1st vaccines) and adult cats $100. While our costs, without any additional issues than mentioned above, range from $300 and up per animal.

VERY IMPORTANTLY - we treat these pets like they are our own. We do not work on a first come first served basis, we place them only to appropriate homes. We do not do same day dog adoptions; which ensures far fewer returns of many adopted pets. History reveals, sadly, in many cases; the dog will later be abandoned or returned by applicant, as often when the applicant is attempting to adopt the dog or pup immediately - it is equivalent to impulse buying - except a dog is not an item to return to a department store once it no longer fits or suits.

WE DO NOT RECEIVE GRANTS AND ARE NOT SUBSIDIZED!!

Please remember we may not be local to you however we pick dogs and cats up from the clinics at Exeter, Kirkton, Zurich, Clinton, Seaforth,Ripley, Walkerton, Paisley, Durham and Southampton and beyond !

    Who We Are

We run this service as strictly unpaid volunteers - we pick up the stray animals at the local pounds that are due to be euthanized after we get them in good health and assess and foster them through out the area until an appropriate home is found - we currently cover Owen Sound, Southampton thru Kirkton areas, and have even been called to assist in Toronto & Oakville - we also list animals for people that cannot keep them.

THE PROCESS - How it Works

-Fill out an online q and a on the adoption page of www.adoptapet.lucknow.on.ca & then email to us - i will review the application, alongwith any caregiver off the pet to see if you suit the desired dog or cats needs.
if you are a successful applicant we will then arrange a viewing of the dog or cat you are interested in.

if you MUST contact Kathi by phone (email will be answered much faster) - please do so after 6 p.m. ( i work at a paying job each weekday and close the business monday, and thursday- before i head home to clean the cat shelter to clean and to let my dogs out) and leave a message stating the animal's name, your name and phone number - but you should have completed the q and a at that point.

(We will match our dogs and cats temperament and age with the family's demographics and life style, thus we do not operate on a first come first serve basis. If an applicant is not chosen for a particular animal of interest and is a suitable candidate for adoption, we will keep the application on file in the hope that we can make a positive match in
