Who We Are
German Shepherd Rescue Toronto (GSRT) is a small, entirely volunteer, not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing public education, veterinary care and forever homes for abused, neglected and/or abandoned German Shepherd Dogs.
Did you know that many local pounds destroy dogs after only 5 days or sell them for animal research?
An alarming number of our GSDs come from cases of abuse and neglect by previous owners. We have also been very disappointed to realize that once the cheque is cashed, many breeders of GSDs are no longer interested in the well being of the dog they bred. GSRT exists to educate people on responsible dog guardianship.
Each dog applying to our program is evaluated for temperament and behavior. All accepted dogs are spayed or neutered, updated on vaccinations, receive essential medical care and lots of TLC. The dogs are then placed into GSRT foster homes while they await their forever home. Finally, each dog is carefully placed in a loving home with a family that matches that dog's temperament, activity level and specific needs.
As we do not have a shelter, we can only take in a small number of dogs. We are always looking for more foster homes so that we can help as many dogs as possible.

*Please note: We DO NOT take owner surrenders or assist breeders' with placing their homebred dogs, but are happy to provide them with advice and screening criteria.
Please spay and neuter your pets, and please, "Don't breed and buy while shelter animals die."
Adopting a Friend
To adopt a dog from GSRT, you must fill out an adoption application, including one veterinary and two personal references. We only adopt to the Ontario area. All dogs will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and given a health check prior to being placed in their new home. The dog will be evaluated to ensure a suitable match between family and dog. We will then arrange to meet with you for a home visit.
We require a fenced yard and do not adopt out to families with children under the age of eight, or families with cats or small dogs. All family members must be in agreement about adopting a dog, and all family members, including your dog(s) must be present during the visit. We do not adopt dogs to homes with intact pets, unless for medical reasons. We also will require landlord permission to have a German Shepherd Dog if you are in a rental situation.
Our donation required for adoptions is $350. For a special needs dog, the donation is $175. **100% of adoption donations go towards spaying, neutering, medical care and fostering expenses of the dogs prior to adoption.**
