Is an Australian Cattle Dog the breed for you?( If you are looking at a different breed or mix breed, please do the research before you consider adoption.)

Temperament

Cattle dogs are highly intelligent , some even say brilliant, and highly trainable. Generally, they have a fun sense of humour and a zest for life. Most are good with animals and children of all ages, provided they have been properly socialized. They are devoted and loyal to family.

Suspicious by nature, some may be stand-off-ish with strangers and others are quite social. They are active and alert companions. Intuitive and keen, they are ideal for work such as search and rescue or service dogs.

Cattle dogs need mental stimulation even more than physical activity. A cattle dog needs to finish his day, feeling he has "earned his keep". Pleasing his owner is his main agenda. Cattle dogs live to serve. A happy cattle dog is one who has done a good job and received your praise.

An unhappy, unfulfilled cattle dog may become depressed, anxious, agitated, aggressive, hyperactive, or may bark incessantly. A cattle dog needs to be an actively involved member of the family. As wonderful as they are, a cattle dog is not a wise choice for a first time dog owner.

Training

Agile and athletic, this breed loves to play. They excel at any type of dog sport, such as flyball, agility, and frisbee. Being a competitive breed, they also enjoy Rally-O and obedience training.

Unlike most other breeds, cattle dogs learn most of what they know by watching their people around them. They are an independent-thinking breed developed to watch their handler's behaviour and even body language. They take the initiative and independently mimic behaviours and routine. *Rule of Thumb: Never let a cattle dog see you do anything you don't want him to do!

Physical Characteristics

Cattle dogs are a compact, knee-high, medium length double-coated housedog. They may have a docked or full tail and prick ears. Coat colour may be red or blue merle, with many variations.

This is a very hearty breed, with next to no health or genetic issues. The only real breed health issue is deafness or blindness most commonly at birth. Commonly, with old age, they may develop cataracts, which may be due to UV exposure. Cattle dogs are so resilient and amazingly adaptable that often the issue is not obvious to those who are unaware. Their average life span is 12 to 15 years. However, often they may live to the late teens and remain quite healthy to the end.
