Who We Are

Welcome to the home page of the Hamilton branch of Action Volunteers for Animals! Action Volunteers for Animals is just what its name suggests: an organization of people who are active on behalf of non-human animals, and who give their time and energy without monetary reward. AVA began in 1972 as a group of Toronto Humane Society workers who kept THS shelter animals alive during a strike of regular shelter staff. They decided to continue to work together after the strike ended, and to call themselves Action Volunteers For Animals. AVA became a registered charity in 1980. Our spay/neuter program was responsible for sterilizing and returning to good health, an average of 5.1 homeless and/or injured animals per day in 2004. . 99% of all money raised goes directly into our vet fund! All this money is raised through our many fundraising efforts. Our funding comes from donations, membership fees, garage sales, and our annual Bazaar which is held each November. AVA receives no government funding, preferring to maintain its independence. .

Our organization serves Toronto and the surrounding area including Hamilton Please note that AVA does not have a shelter but operates on a foster home basis therefore AVA will provide assistance to those who are willing to take an active part in the rescue of an animal, in other words, are willing to foster. Of course special consideration will be given to the elderly and infirm.

Reminder

Please remember to save and send in your Canadian tire money (we use this to buy raffle prizes and humane traps) and to collect HBC Rewards points and Airmile points for us. Our HBc Community number is 8393196. You can link your HBc account to our charity by visiting www.hbcrewards.com/community . These points can be collected at Zellers, The Bay and Home Outfitters. If you would like to collect Airmile points for us please call Sandy at 416-363-0236.

Cats, Cats, Cats

As always we are asking you, your family members and friends to open your homes and hearts to foster cats and/or kittens, and of course we are ALWAYS needing loving, permanent homes for the many cats we have up for adoption. Consider adding one or more wonderful and deserving felines to your family

Help, Help, Help

We are constantly doing fundraisers such as garage sales and raffles. If you have any good quality items you wish to donate to our spring garage sale or any any gift items that would be suitable for raffles and door prizes such as gift baskets, gift certificates etc. give us a call at 905-547-2025 or 905-383-2416

We Need You!!! BEFORE YOU TAKE IN A FREE KITTEN, please think about the costs that come with him or her. Full vaccines and spay or neuter surgery can cost hundreds of dollars. Rescues and shelters are full of young cats who were adopted as kittens and given up a short time later when their people realized the costs involved. Please don't make another wonderful young cat face the heartbreak of abandonment. If you can't afford their medical care, consider adopting a young cat who's already had everything done. Our adoption fee includes having the cat spayed or neutered, vaccinated, vet checked, dewormed, flea treated, and given any other necessary medical care. It is much less than you would expect for all that's included. If you want to share your life with a feline friend and believe pets are a lifetime commitment, we'd love to hear from you. .

Adopting A Friend

There is an adoption process and an adoption fee that is designed to offset some , but not all of the veterinarian costs to the charity, protect the pet, and in so being simply a token of good faith. AVA, to the best of it’s ability, tries to adopt these pets, who have been members of our foster families, to responsible pet owners, in other words, people who intended to have their pets altered in the first place and who will also want to treat the pets as members of their families. In other words, we know that these people will realize that the fee is no where near that charged by regular veterinarians.

All adult animals available for adoption are vaccinated, microchipped, neutered/spayed, dewormed and defleaed. Regarding kittens, they will have had their 1st needles and have been dewormed and defleaed at the time of adoption and arrangements for the neutering/spaying will occur at appropriate time. New owners will be responsible for their second set of needles and rabies vaccine at the appropriate time.

Feline Fees:

1 Feline dewormed, defleaed, vaccinated, neutered/spayed, microchipped $150…. .
