News: Happy came to us from a shelter where he was due to be euthanized. We have him checked off as special needs because he was born with 2 back legs that don't bend. However he gets around very well - he goes up and down stairs and can move fast if he wants to! The flap of his ear swelled up like a small balloon and there was no option but to have surgery as it was very uncomfortable for him. We are hoping to get some donations to cover the cost of Happy's ear hematoma surgery. Please see below for instructions on how to donate to receive a tax receipt.

Who We Are:

"Nickquenum" (pronounced Nick / kwen / num) is a Native word that means "I am going home" We are a NOT FOR PROFIT small rescue group based in Guelph and founded in 2005. We are made up of VOLUNTEERS. We do not have any paid staff and do not receive funding of any kind. We rely completely on donations. We do not have a building or shelter. Dogs are cared for in volunteer foster homes.

Our Mission:

We work with small, rural shelters/pounds/animal controls and humane societies to rescue dogs that would otherwise be euthanized due to lack of space. We accomplish this by removing the dog(s) from the shelter and placing them in caring foster homes until we can match them with loving committed permanent adopters.

Adopting a Friend:

Because our mandate is to help dogs in shelters we regret that we do not as a rule take owner surrendered dogs. We will consider individual cases. We would also be happy to provide you with advice on re-homing your dog or to refer you to no or low kill humane societies, shelters or rescue groups that do accept owner surrendered dogs.

The Adoption Process:

The process starts by completing an adoption application. Please email northernpassage17@yahoo.ca to request an application. The application will be reviewed and you will be contacted if it seems to be a match. If approved, a meet and greet time is set up. All of our dogs are in foster homes, we do not have a shelter. All members of the family must attend as well as any canine members. If the meeting goes well a home visit is arranged and then the adoption is finalized. A standard adoption fee and the signing of an adoption agreement are required. Adoption applications are not processed on a first come first serve basis. We may collect more than one application to consider and we choose the one that we feel is the best match for the dog. We do not do same day adoptions. We don't adopt dogs to families with children under 5 years of age.

All dogs have received core vaccinations, dewormer, heart worm preventative, and are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. We try to answer emails and messages as promptly as possible so please be patient for most of us are working full time, have families and our own dogs to care for. For an adoption application please email: northernpassage17@yahoo.ca
