"NEWS"

Dog Owners Liability Act and Bill 132 are now in effect. Visit our website and download an informational booklet that will answer your questions on the new 'pit bull' legislation.

You CAN help us do something about cruelty and neglect to animals. Please make a donation now to ensure we can continue to carry out investigations, and donate for the care of the many other animals in our shelter who are the innocent victims of abuse. Without a doubt we need stronger and better animal protection laws, but we need your donations for our Animal Protection Services work. Our Agents will continue to investigate and protect animals using the laws we do have now. We cannot do this without your support! THANK YOU!

Stop by the shelter or mail a money order or cheque to Welland & District Humane Society, 60 Provincial Street, Welland, ON L3B 5W7.

Thank You!

OUR ADOPTION POLICIES

Adopting an animal is a multi step process, and each stage is in place for a reason. It begins when you have chosen a pet that you are interested in adopting. The next step is for you to fill out an adoption questionnaire. We'll email you the application or we can send it to you by fax. We ask many questions in order to help us screen adopters and ensure that the pet is being adopted for the right reasons and that the decision is the best one - for that pet. We want to help you make the right choice...to ensure this is the correct pet for you and that you are the best owner for him or her.

If your application meets the criteria and we feel the match is a good one, then you will come in and sign the adoption agreement. We'll make sure you understand the obligations of making this new addition to your family. If you are adopting a dog, the adoption is conditional on a property yard inspection being completed. The inspection is conducted to determine if the dog is suitable for the environment that you will be providing for it, and to assess the conditions it will be kept in.

The adoption fee is $225 for dogs and $150 for cats. When you are certain that you want to adopt this animal, a non-refundable deposit of $50 will be taken to confirm your intent to proceed. Before your application can become final, arrangements are made to have your pet spayed / neutered. This may take 1 to 5 days. When your new pet returns from the veterinarian, you will be able to pick it up here, and at that point you will finalize and complete the adoption process. Then you and your new companion animal head for home. At this stage, the adoption becomes final, and you are the legal owner and take full responsibility for all care of the pet.

When you come in to pick up your pet and take it home, you MUST bring a leash and properly fitting collar (for all dogs); and a carrier/kennel cab for cats. The stress of leaving the shelter and travelling in a strange vehicle, is a factor for many pets that leave our shelter. Whenever pets are in new surroundings, their behaviour can be unpredictable. Your safety as the driver of the vehicle, and the pets safety while in your vehicle is paramount, so you must ensure that the trip home will be a safe one. Collars, leashes and carriers are standard equipment for all new pet owners and those who are introducing new companion animals to their homes. These are items you will need to have on hand in order to safely transport your pet to the veterinarian for a health assessment or if it needs medical attention in the future - so please ensure you have them available before you pick up your new pet. We will not release any adopted pets, if they leave the shelter without the proper items to get them home safely.
