Who We Are
Smitty’s Shih Tzu Rescue is a group of dog-minded individuals. We help one dog at a time. It is in honour of Smitty, a one year old abused Shih Tzu, that we named the rescue. Smitty is now a friendly, outgoing six year old who loves to do agility with his mom. Our goal is to turn unwanted, abused or neglected Shih Tzu and other small breeds, into wanted, and loved companion dogs
Adopting a friend
Adoption applicants are carefully screened. This process begins with an adoption application. Personal or phone interview, personal and vet reference checks and finally a home visit follow this. Only after completing all these steps is a decision made about placing a dog in a potential home. It is at this point that the potential adopter meets the dog. We reserve the right not to approve an adoption if our criteria are not met.
All dogs are microchipped and the microchip remains in our name. An adoption contract is used and adopters are asked to pay an adoption fee to offset vet costs associated with the dog.
