Who We Are

The Simcoe & District Humane Society, chartered in January, 1953, has worked hard at aiding animals in distress since the 1950's, The Foster Care Program is an integral part of the Society, as it does not have a shelter as of yet, but 2004 was a great stepping-stone in this endeavor when the Society purchased property at 24 Grigg Drive, Simcoe.

As the number of stray, sick and injured animals has grown, so has the community support and the Society now has a goal to build a shelter in the near future.

The SDHS relies on donations from the community, and assists as many animals possible within their means.

As space in the foster care program allows, SDHS provides adoptable animals the necessary medical care, including FIV (Feline Aids) and Feline Leukemia testing for felines, Heartworm testing for canines, vaccinations, deworming, flea and other parasite treatment and microchipping for each animal. It is the Societys goal to find every adoptable animal a home to call its own!

In 2007, the Society has temporarily assisted and housed more than 35 animals, until owners have been able to provide appropriately for their pet. Public Awareness and Good Pet Ownership Education has been a key component in the Societys community involvement over the last 3 years. Being involved in the community, introducing the different elements of animal care and owning a pet has been a priority with the Society, especially in a community where highly transmittable diseases are apparent.

The Society always remains grateful to those families who open their hearts and homes to all our animals during their stay in the foster care program. Thank you to those who have taken responsibility for the Mother Cats, having them spayed, vaccinated and releasing to appropriate families and homes.

Again, a special thank you goes out to our Veterinary Clinics who assist us on a daily basis and understand our needs with our animals in care.

As members, we are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to doing more with the growing numbers of animals needing help.

We Need Your Help!

Animal Care and Control is a community responsibility.

Your local Humane Society cannot do it all.

WE WANT YOU TO KNOW:

  • We do not get tax dollars from any level of government or the O.S.P.C.A.
  • We rely totally on donations from members of our community
  • We do not have a shelter facility, we rely on foster homes who volunteer to look after our animals in care
  • Every member of the Simcoe and District Humane Society is a volunteer (there are NO paid positions)
  • Food, supplies, vet care, advertising etc. for each animal is covered by the SDHS while the animal is in care

TO BECOME PART OF THE SOLUTION YOU CAN:

  • Be a responsible pet owner and spay and neuter your pet
  • Become a member of the Simcoe and District Humane Society and volunteer to help
  • Become a foster care provider for a rescued animal until they are ready for adoption (no cost to you)
  • Donate supplies or money
  • Sponsor an Adopt-A-Pet Ad in the Local Paper
  • Adopt a Rescued Animal into your family so that a space is available for the next animal in need of care

Moving Forward

Welcome to 2008 and a year of major growth for Simcoe and District Humane Society.

Congratulations to the new Board of Directors and those taking on Appointed Positions. There is so much to look forward to and continue the work as the new Board of Directors takes over and membership grows.

I am proud of every member, every volunteer and so grateful to every person who has supported us through 2006 & 2007. Your assistance has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated.

Sure there have been some growing pains and roadblocks, but we have worked passed them and now it is time to hold fast as the whirlwind of activities takes place. Everyone’s help will be requested and required .......from volunteering at events to raise funds and awareness to volunteering with a hammer to raise the building.

Just think, in a few months, we will have a building to call our own and a temporary home for our animals, whether they are in quarantine or ready for adoption. We will not lose our foster care program but compliment it.

We will have a place to hold our meetings and if necessary hold our fundraisers in bad weather.

People will be able to visit our pets, come in for information, or get assistance from a volunteer - face to face!

I am asking every member and supporter to help now! Please remember the animals and all our programs that we have to offer. Today, we need your help more than ever.

Please give a minimum $20 donation - $10 can help build the shelter and $10 will help us with the owing amounts from our very busy 2007 year and our continuing care.

Again, while we "Spring" into 2008, I look forward to working with volunteers at events and seeing members out to meetings! Keep up the great work continuing to help those who cannot help themselves!

Cathie Hosken, President
