Shelter Dog: written by Mary (Boddy)Gray Dec 1st, 2008
There is nothing but tomorrow
And the hope they always feel
There is nothing like tomorrow
To make their dreams seem real
They awaken in the morning
With hopes of going home
They are surrounded by so many
Yet they all feel so alone
Voice of the visitors
Are heard from far away
Are they looking for a lost one?
Their beloved pet gone stray?
The barks and whines are deafening
As the prisoners make their plea
Their voices filled with anguish
As they cry out "pick me, pick me!"
And as they pass the graying old dog
With the eyes that are cloudy with age
They stop to feel his loneliness
With fingers through his cage
Soon they quietly walk away
They want a pup instead
But the man he makes a solemn promise
"I'll be back" was all he said
As the days go by, the old dog waits
For the man with the gentle voice
But the final day he is taken away
His keeper has no choice
That very same day the man returns
He's got something on his mind
He wants to bring the old dog home
The one that is clearly blind
"Sorry" they said, "you have come too late"
They put that old soul to sleep
With a broken heart, he hung his head
And the man began to weep
And so my friends if you meet a dog
That reaches into your heart
Don't delay in rescuing him
Don't let anything keep you apart
The Rainbow Bridge is never closer
Than it is to the lonely stray
For a Shelter Dog the final journey
Is only precious hours away.
1)When you see a dog on our site you are interested in applying for, please send an introduction email to the contact person listed with the dog's bio. We like to know as much info to start, all about your situation. WE DO NOT ANSWER ONE LINER EMAILS, WE MUST HAVE LOTS OF INFO FOR INITIAL CONTACT. 2)If we receive a detailed intro, then we are happy to send out an application screening form. We ask that the completed form be returned to us within 24 hours of receiving it. We do ask for detailed answers on the form, it's a great way to get to know you better and understand more about your pet ownership. We will get back to applicants as soon as possible after receiving the completed form. We often have further questions for more clarification. 3)If after review we want to proceed with your application, we then offer a phone interview. You must contact us within 24 hours of being offered a phone interview (we provide you with necessary contact info at that point). 4)If you are an approved applicant once a phone interview is completed, you must be able to come for the in person visit in a timely manner. WE DO NOT HOLD DOGS!!! You must make arrangements to come by the next closest weekend from when you were approved. We also do weekday visits. We do allow same day adoptions. If you currently own a dog, it MUST come to the foster home to meet the dog you hope to adopt. ALL people that will be living with the dog you hope to adopt, MUST come to the foster home for the meeting, no exceptions.
Barkin Rescue is proud to label each and every dog one of our dog as a "We Don't Know What Mutt"! Since the majority of Barkin dogs are strays, we have no way to know their lineage and therefore cannot accurately label a dog as a specific breed or breed mix. Barkin seeks adopters who welcome the uniqueness of a "mutt"!
Barkin Rescue is always happy to talk with folks who are thinking of becoming foster families. We would love to explore with you, to see if fostering is something for you and your family.

About Barkin
Barkin Rescue was started in 2003 by a dog lover named Mary. She worked very hard to establish our group. Barkin Rescue pulls dogs from rural shelters. WE ARE NOT A GROUP THAT ACCEPTS OWNER SURRENDERS, WE RESCUE DOGS FROM SHELTERS ONLY. We place each dog in private foster homes where they will stay until the forever home is found. Barkin Rescue is located in rural, Southwestern Ontario. Our address on Petfinder is listed as being London because we have several volunteers in the London area, but we are truly a rural group. We are NOT a shelter facility and do not keep dogs in a kennel situation, we are not an open to the public operation. Our rescued dogs are mostly rural dogs, often unsocialized and treated quite poorly, not walked on leashes or cuddled, not taught about proper manners or even housetrained. Our dogs were previously outside only dogs or chained dogs, making them a higher risk for many common canine ailments. We are striving to change the way rural dog owners view their pets, we are trying to help folks understand the benefits of owning a dog as a household pet only. It is important we get our message out about having pets spayed or neutered as well. When they come into our care, we work hard with the dogs so they learn to trust again and feel confident again. Barkin has all adult dogs over six months of age, altered, vaccinated, dewormed(where warranted) and as of June 9th/2006, all adult dogs will be heartworm tested. We also treat for fleas and ticks. Barkin also makes sure any other obvious ailment afflicting a dog is treated. We thank ELGIN ANIMAL HOSPITAL for their part in aiding us reach our goal of helping as many dogs as we can. We also thank OAKRIDGE ANIMAL CLINIC as well for their help with vet care for some of our rescued pooches! We are a not for profit group. We operate solely on adoption fees alone and some generous donations from animal loving supporters. We charge an adoption fee of $250 per adult dog and $200 for young puppies. (subject to change for certain cases)
It's very important for folks to understand we DO NOT adopt our dogs as outside dogs only. Your house is their house...NO EXCEPTIONS. These dogs have been through enough...this is their second chance at a better life, they deserve to be the household pet only, loved and cherished for the rest of their lives. We stand very strong in our belief and no amount of lecturing or debating will change our views...thank you for understanding our position on this.
"If you have ever looked into the eyes of a lost, starving, injured or lonely dog and promised him a life of love...and then kept your promise....to me you are an angel." Mary of Barkin Rescue
