WHO WE ARE

Friends of Abandoned Pets (FOAP) is a Canadian Registered Charity in Ottawa, ON Canada. Our mandate is to find permanent, caring homes for dogs and cats abandoned in our community; prevent any further increase to the dog and cat overpopulation problem by spaying and neutering; prevent the spread of disease by vaccinating and providing other necessary veterinary care; and promote responsible pet ownership.

This is an onerous task, since thousands of animals are abandoned in our community every year. This doesn't stop Friends of Abandoned Pets volunteers, a group of dedicated and caring people who love animals and are especially sensitive to the plight of abandoned, homeless cats and dogs, from getting involved.

HOW WE HELP

We each help in our own way. Some of us foster. Some drive pets to and from the veterinarian. Some volunteer at fundraising events. Some make annual donations. Some make bequests. However we contribute to FOAP, our reward is to see a frightened, often desperately thin, sometimes injured homeless cat or dog blossom into a self-confident, happy pet in a loving home.

Since we do not have a shelter, our charges stay in temporary foster homes until a permanent adoptive home is found. All our pets are examined by a veterinarian, checked and treated for parasites, are vaccinated and spayed or neutered. Once they've settled into a foster home and ready for adoption, we begin our search for a home that's a suitable match for our foster pets. And, even once they'be been adopted, our involvement with our former charges doesn't end. Friends of Abandoned Pets will always take back one of our adopted pets.

ADOPTING A FRIEND

The first step in our adoption process is a telephone interview with one of our adoption coordinators, followed by a home visit. If all goes well, potential adopters can meet the pet(s) most suited to them. An adoption fee applies. While we strive to ensure that all kittens and puppies are spayed or neutered before adoption, if they're too young for this surgery, a spay/neuter voucher is provided.
