The shelter receives somewhere in the range of 1300 – 1500 animals each year. It is our priority to find all healthy and adoptable animals good homes. We truly wish that we did not have to euthanize any animal, however, we simply refuse to place an animal for adoption that we wouldn't want around our own families! Therefore, every animal is evaluated for behavior issues as well as health and temperament before it is available for adoption.

OUR NEW FOSTERING PROGRAM - How You Can Help!

The Edmond Animal Welfare Shelter has implemented an animal fostering program for adoptable shelter animals who need homes but have not yet found the right family. In an effort to find ALL adoptable animals a new home, we want to find big-hearted folks who share in our vision to provide a temporary home for dogs or cats and perhaps even help rehabilitate certain animals in an effort to get them ready for that special permanent family. Fosterers will become a very integral part of our efforts and will help us with our frequent over-crowding problems.

To be eligible, fosterers must meet and agree to a number of requirements, including, but not limited to a home approval check and a background investigation. All animals that will be sent to foster homes will first have been vet checked and spayed or neutered. Foster families must agree to bring the animal to adoption events or to the shelter if requested. No one in the fosterer's household must have ever been arrested on any kind of crime against or involving animals.

There are quite a few requirements that need to be met in order to be approved as a foster family - they are not intended to discourage interested people.  They are simply to help ensure that these animals will be afforded only the very best quality care and environment.  If you'd like to help, give us a call at 216-7615 or e-mail us for more info.

Adopting a friend

Click for more picturesThe Edmond Animal Welfare wants to find homes for all the adoptable animals in the shelter – once animals have passed the evaluation and are placed in adoption they REMAIN in adoption! We do not euthanize animals that PASS unless they have behavior changes or health changes while in adoption. We always have a variety of wonderful pets, but they tend to go fast. We have a new beautiful facility that allows us to adequately house all animals in heated/cooled kennel areas with ample space to move about. Please contact us as soon as possible if interested in one of our adoptable animals! We can be contacted via phone at 405-216-7615 or e-mail us. When animals are received into the shelter, they are held for 4 business days. After 72 hours, the animal becomes the property of the City of Edmond and is evaluated for the possibility of adoption. If the animal passes the evaluation it becomes available for adoption the following business day. Adoptions begin at 10:00 AM each day. Adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event more than one person is interested in a particular animal, and both are present at the same time, an “auction” will be conducted and the highest bidder will become the new owner. Puppies received into the shelter are kept a minimum of 10 days for observation before being available for adoption. This is to minimize the chance that we adopt out a sick puppy.

Adoption fee for all animals is $70.00 and includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, annual vaccinations, heartworm test (for dogs) feline leukemia test (for cats) and worming. In the event an animal becomes available before we've had time to complete these procedures, or is simply too young, a rebate is built-in to the adoption fee; meaning: you still pay $70.00 at the time of adoption, but receive a refund when certain procedures are completed and documention is provided by the deadline.

Rebates are as follows:
Spay/Neuter: $40.00
Rabies Vaccine: $20.00.

Come Visit Us!

We would love for you to come visit our shelter, but want to share some information about responsible pet ownership first. Even though we want to find families for these homeless pets, we would like to ensure that they go to good homes. Please give a great deal of thought to the big responsibility of owning a pet. It is a life that requires your daily attention and affection. Consider your lifestyle and how much time you can devote to a pet as well as how much room for exercise this pet will require. If you feel that you can provide a good home for a pet after considering these factors, we believe you can find what you’re looking for here at our shelter.
