Our Featured Pet...

Hi. My name is Gus and I’m a young eight pound male Shih Tzu. My life hasn’t been the best since I was born-I just never felt my best and had two back legs that didn’t want to co-operate with me when I tried walking. I wanted to run with all my brothers and sisters, and chase after birds but I could never catch up and always seemed to be left behind.

One day I woke up thinking it was going to be a normal day as usual but that wasn’t the case, my owners didn’t want me anymore. Luckily, a nice lady took me into her home. I couldn’t stop shaking so she held me for a bit, gave me kisses and then I calmed down. I love kisses and being cuddled! Her two excited dogs greeted me and that made me a little nervous at first. But I sniffed them and they sniffed me, then we became instant friends! We played and played! I was afraid of her cats too, at first, but eventually I learned to enjoy cozying up next to them. I tried to be a good little boy and wait to be let out before I relieved myself-I only had a few accidents and felt bad when I did.

Although I had such a fun time and loved being around all my furry friends, I still wasn’t feeling really well and my poor back legs were still bothering me so she decided she needed to get some help. She took me to the vet where they found out that I have something called a luxating patella in both of my back legs. I don’t know what that means, but the doctor said one of my legs needs surgery immediately or I could lose it. I can’t imagine not being able to run around and play! They also found out my owners didn’t take good care of me at all, and I have heart worms. I’m pretty scared right now, but the lady with the rescue told me that they’re going to take care of me and it’s all going to be ok. I feel like I have been so much trouble when all I want is a home with someone to love and take care of me.

Well I have had the surgeries to fix my knee and was neutered too. I got my vaccinations and started my heartworm treatment. I feel so much better physically but I am still afraid of a lot of things but if you are willing to give me a little time I know I can love you and I promise to always try to be the best little man I can be. My adoption fee is 150.00 and all you have to do is go to www.dogsasfamily.com and fill out an adoption application for me, Gus.

Who We Are

Dogs As Family, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3),non-profit, all volunteer organization whose mission is to rescue, provide sanctuary, rehabilitate, and find loving forever homes for dogs that have been neglected, are stray, abused or are just unwanted.

*** All Dogs As Family dogs are housed in foster homes where they are provided with an enormous amount of love and any medical attention that may be required to insure that they are in good health before adoption. They are all spayed or neutered, brought up-to-date on shots and tested for heartworms, lyme and ehrlichia before being placed in their new homes. When time permits, our dogs are also housetrained and taught some basic obedience.

*** All Dogs As Family dogs are evaluated for personality and temperament. This helps us to place them in homes that are well suited to their needs and to the needs of their future owners.

*** We carefully screen each of our potential adopters to ensure every dog is placed in a home that is appropriate and specific to the individual dog, so the adoption will be successful for the family and the pet.

*** We maintain a relationship with the new family, and are there for them and the dog as needed.

Our adoption process starts with an adoption application, followed by a phone visit, then home visit. We do not ship furry family members and meet every adoptive family in person. We can do out of state adoptions if you are able to travel to Oklahoma City to meet us. You can fill out an adoption application on our website at www.dogsasfamily.com

All our pets are in foster homes. To meet one of our kids you must first complete an adoption application and submit it. We will contact you and make an appointment for you to meet your new furry family member.
