Lakewood Animal Shelter

Our Pet List

Who We Are

The Citizens Committee for a Lakewood Animal Shelter, Inc. (CCLAS, pronounced "claws") was founded in 1983 to assist City Administration in Lakewood, Ohio in establishing a humane shelter for the community's lost and abandoned cats and dogs. Once the Shelter became a reality, CCLAS continued its support through fundraising and providing volunteers to help the wardens care for the animals impounded there. Every year CCLAS contributes thousands of dollars to maintain the animal protection programs that make our municipal facility much more than a "dog pound."

Adopting a friend

The Lakewood Animal Shelter deals strictly with strays who have been picked up within the City of Lakewood. Aside from what the wardens, shelter personnel and volunteers observe during the animals' stay, we have no knowledge of their prior history. Each dog is held for a minimum period of 24 hours, and each cat for 72 hours, for a chance to be claimed by their previous owners. Before being put up for adoption, every eligible animal receives its temporary shots, a general health evaluation, and is treated for fleas and ear mites, if necessary. Ages listed are approximate.

The adoption fee for each animal is $35. You will also receive a certificate covering the cost of your pet's first veterinarian visit (valid at select area vets), as well as spay/neuter up to $75, which is valid at various participating vets in the area. You will be required to sign a contract agreeing to have your pet fixed by 6 months old. The cats have not been tested for Feline Leukemia or FIV. We recommend that you keep your new pet isolated from your other pets until it has been taken to the veterinarian, which should be within the first two weeks of ownership.

If there is a health, behavioral or any other problem with the animal, it may be returned to the Shelter within two weeks in exchange for another animal or a refund (allowing a period for processing of fees).
