Our Featured Pet... *Stella*

Meet Stella...

Stella is a super sweet girl and would make a wonderful family pet. She is good with children as well as other animals. She is a medium sized dog. She was left behind when her family moved, and would like nothing more then to become a part of your family. Please give this sweet baby a chance to show you how much love she has to offer.

HEARTWORM IS BAD NEWS AND HARD ON THE ANIMAL AS WELL AS THE POCKETBOOK. IT IS SO PREVENTABLE. PLEASE HAVE YOUR PET TESTED AND PLACED ON PREVENTATIVE.

ISSUES REMAIN AT THE INFAMOUS HARRISON COUNTY DOG POUND IN CADIZ, OH despite only a handful of dogs.

Meanwhile, ten (10) of the eleven (11) dogs surrendered by one family are now out of boarding at our vets, with one remaining. We expended over $9000 vetting and sheltering those dogs. Little Man has incurred $1123.76 to date, alone. The two Maltese, the owner having been found dead on the floor, remain at the vets. We have incurred $1604.09 on Fang, $660.81 on Brandly Lee. The two pups that were refused at the pound needed extraordinary vetting as well. One has been place, but April continues to recover from surgery and demodex manage. We have incurred $735.77 on her care and will be ordering $100 worth of meds which will last her for sometime. We have NO SHELTER. I am one woman here in this poverty stricken county trying to help the dogs. We created a chipin at http://aospca.chipin.com/harrison-county-dogs-vet-bills for those that wish to help with the vet bill. ,P.

NOBLE COUNTY UPDATE: The three (3) Defendants in the Noble County animal seizure case have been found GUILTY of ONE (1) count of OF ANIMAL ABUSE and were sentenced to 180 days in jail, 90 supsended with the condition they own NO animals. Gain time at 3 days credit for every one served means they will spend 30 days in jail out of the 180 day sentence, unless they violate the "no animal" provision. Each received a $250 FINE, and RESTITUTION of $4200 each. Small victory for the animals, given our lame laws. Last Noble County dog, Sam, has just been treated for heart worms and is staying at the boarding facilities at our vets. Heart worm is so preventable, treatment so very painful. We love Sam, very much and our thoughts are with him now.

Our anniversary has just passed. We formed in October, 2009 and have had a busy year. We are a multi-county SPCA, presently serving animals in Columbiania, Carroll, Guernsey, Tuscarawas, Harrison, Jefferson and Belmont Counties. As we grow, we will include additional counties in the Appalachian region of Ohio. Having said that, we will try to help any animal anywhere if we can do so, even if outside that perimeter and outside the State of Ohio, as we did in the Noble County case.

If you know of an animal in need, or someone you know must surrender a pet, please let us know and we will try to help either by taking it in ourselves or assisting in locating a rescue organization or individual.

STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY! Report animal cruelty, neglect and abuse directly to local law enforcement and request a call record number. They typically will route the call to your local humane organization for action. If you don't know who to contact, send complaints to aospca@verizon.net and we will help you find the correct officials.

ATTENTION RESCUES/HUMANE ORGANIZATIONS: We partner with rescue individuals and humane organizations. Animals in need of being moved to rescue will have "need rescue" in the title of the listings. We rely and depend on your dedication to the animals. Many are moved to safety and on their way towards rehabiliation and good health when you take them in to your own rescues, especially when we have no space and a depleted vetting fund. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER: If you are a rescue or humane organization that needs some assistance or directed to resources, we will try to assist you, as well.

EDUCATION: If you are a teacher or a group, we are happy to come and talk with your students and/or members, furnishing education while letting your group meet some of the animals we help.

WHERE DO THEY ALL COME FROM? Many of our animals are simply owner surrenders. Others are the victim of animal hoarders, puppy mill breeders, abandoned, discarded animals, innocent victims that find themselve in kill shelters, and those that fell victim to cruelty and abuse.

For every animal in a dog pound, shelter or rescue, there is a person responsible for it being there. OHIO ANIMAL LAWS ARE AS LAX AS THEY COME: We do seek reform and changes in the antiquated laws of this state while we actively work to reduce the pet population by way of mandatory spaying/neutering. Cruelty to animals is NOT a felony in Ohio, as it is in most states. There are some counties still gassing dogs.

We are the Appalachian Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Inc., registered with the Ohio Secretary of State and the IRS with a designated 501(c)3 status. We are a non-profit organization. We operate entirely on donations from individuals and businesses as well as monies received from pet adoptions. Sometimes it is more of operating on a shoestring and a prayer. We hope to see a shelter realized in the future located in one of the counties mentioned above. Sponsorship and donations are important not only to feed and care for the animals, but also in order to pull animals from kill shelters, help with fostering expenses, provide fuel in our vehicles. Gas cards and donations for gas are always appreciated. Taking a dog to the vet in order to be spayed/neutered requires four (4) hours of driving back and forth. Rural life has some advantages, however, when it comes to vetting our animals, it is certainly not an advantage. One of these counties does not have a four lane highway within the entire county, another does, but only for a matter of a few miles. Rescue is challenging in isolated areas, such as rural Appalachian Ohio, to say the least.

Ever wanted to help an SPCA? We welcome volunteers! We can always use the help!

Can't physically help with the animals but still want to? We also welcome donations of supplies to care for our animals. Toys and treats are important to the animals. Obviously food, shelter and a warm bed are necessary. We can not obtain enough collars and leashes to keep up with the demand. Puppy training pads are also needed. General cleaning supplies such as Clorox, paper towels, sanitizers, garbage bags, laundry detergent are a few other items we can always use.

Organize a fund raiser. Have an SPCA yardsale, organize a bike Poke Run, use your imagination.

WE ARE ALWAYS IN NEED FOSTER HOMES! Please email for a fostering application. Fostering a pet is a rewarding experience for you and a great service for the pet. The application, in part, helps us match us the most suited pet to your home environment.

VETTING OUR ANIMALS: Most of our funds go directly for veterinarian care for our animals. We always welcome vetting sponsors and those who wish to do so may donate directly to our care providers. Our northern county animals are vetted at Oak Point Animal Care in Dover, OH in Tuscarawas County, which is our primary veterinarians. Their phone number is 330-343-8881. Simply let them know you wish to donate on our account.

Donations are tax-deductible! We are a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.

Who We Are

The Appalachian Ohio SPCA, Inc., is a humane organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for the animals in our region, while helping the animal overpopulation by spaying and neutering of all the animals we adopt. We do not receive funding from the ASCPA or HSUS. Funds sent to those organizations do not trickle down to us here in Ohio once they are sent to New York and Washington, D.C., as many of you might expect.

We are located in poverty stricken rural Appalachia Ohio. Local volunteers are few. Vetting a victim of neglect and those with illnesses and injuries has been challenging to our finances. We believe every animal deserves a chance, and that includes animals that are blind in one eye and have no eye in the other, as well as dogs that must loose every tooth in their mouth due to over breeding by puppy millers and backyard breeders, just to name a few.

Don't buy or breed, please, for the sake of the animals, opt to adopt! If you have never seen a female puppy mill dog that has had a zillion puppies, at least do so before you consider buying from a breeder or pet store. Chances are you will be affected by what you see, bone exposed where gums used to be, etc. The majority of animals found at pet stores will have come from puppy mills. Please do not support that industry! Breed is greed and it is all about the money, pure and simple $$$$$$$.

Adopting a friend

ABOUT ADOPTING: Adopting an animal requires much thought and commitment. If you are serious about committing love and care for a pet for its lifetime, please request an adoption application. Adoptions fees do apply. Many times we will have a higher amount invested in a pet than the adoption fee we charge for that animal, mainly due to extraordinary vetting expenses and rehabilitation of the pet. We care about our animals' health as well as overpopulation. Therefore, all of our animals are spayed/neutered prior to placement. Puppies that are not old enough to be altered may be adopted, however there will be a clause in the contract requiring they be altered within a particular time period, based upon its age and proof must be submitted. In addition, our animals will also be, at minimum, vaccinated against Rabies, DHLPPC, given a Heart Worm testing and vet prescribed Drontal to ensure they are free of parasites (round, tape, hook and whip worms). If we have an animal that needs surgery or extensive vetting, it shall receive that care. Every effort is made by us to ensure the optimim health of the animals in our care.

Come Visit Us!

You can visit any of our animals by appointment, as they would love to meet you. All animals are in foster homes, and again, we do need more foster homes.
