Who We Are

Organization's Mission

Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet was founded on the belief that all animals deserve to live in a safe, nurturing, and loving environment where they can fulfill their role as family member and companion. This is our ideal, the reality is dramatically more brutal. The number of dogs and cats, puppies and kittens, euthanized each year in shelters and pounds because of the lack of homes is simply beyond comprehension. Add to that the number of abandoned and abused animals that live short tragic lives and our mission is clear. Through our network of foster homes and pet adoption services, support of spay/neuter, community outreach/education, and promotion of responsible pet ownership, we hope to provide, on a local level, some measure of relief to the staggering problem of unwanted pets. Ultimately, we hope to foster the healthy, informed, and loving pet-people relationships that will provide the only effective and lasting solution to the heartbreaking predicament of stray, abandoned and unwanted animals.

Organization's History

Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet was begun by a small group of local residents in response to the over abundance of stray and abandoned animals in the Toledo area. The organization received its charter as a non-profit organization in 1977 and the current system of foster home care was created shortly thereafter. Bequests from two generous supporters enabled us to open our own shelter in August, 2009, allowing us to help even more stray and unwanted animals.

Adopting a friend

Last year Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet was able to place many kittens, cats, puppies and dogs in permanent adoptive homes through adoption showings at local retail stores and from our shelter. Potential adopters fill out an interest form and the information provided is used to make a decision as to the best match for both the animal and the adopter. (Although Save-A-Pet’s policy is to take back any animal that doesn’t work out in its new home, this system results in very few returned pets.) All pets are spayed or neutered before adoption.

Adoption fee is currently $75 for cats and kittens and $125 for puppies and dogs to help defray the cost of vet bills. All pets are spayed or neutered before adoption.

See Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet cats and kittens all day, every day at Petco’s Monroe and Talmadge location near Franklin Park. Our thanks to Petco for the fabulous opportunity to give our feline friends daily exposure in the store’s beautiful and secure adoption center. Our “Home for Life” adoption policies still apply - applications are required and there will be no adoptions directly from the store. (If you fall in love, relax, fill out an application, go home and sleep on it. This is a big commitment, probably for the next 15-20 years, so it’s nothing to rush into. We’ll get in touch with you the same or next day, and go over your kitty’s personality and needs in detail, and make sure it’s a good match.)

In addition to the above, please check the Sunday Toledo Blade in the “Dogs” and “Cats” sections of the classifieds. There may be additional showings. Our animals can be viewed 24 hours a day on our website at www.maumeevalleysaveapet.org.
