  • Who We Are

We are two women who bring a total of 30+ years of experience to this rescue group. Both of us have been involved in either private rescue or humane societies in the past and made the choice to open our own rescue. We both feel that foster homes are, by far, a better choice for the animals, allowing them to experience a home situation and, when necessary, learn manners and better behavior to ensure a permanent placement. We love animals, have always had multiple animal households, and just add 1 or 2+ to the pack. We are totally committed to quality placement of our fosters and place no time limit on how long they are in the program. . . our fosters are with us until their "forever" home comes. We are a small, home based rescue program dealing primarily with toy breeds, however, when room allows, we also foster a few large breed dogs. We are not breed specific but do have limited space. Smaller dogs often become stressed in the pounds and stress can bring on various other illnesses. It is our goal to take these smaller dogs who are not doing well in a pound, bring them into a home situation as quickly as possible and allow them to relax and get the one-on-one attention these little guys crave. All of our dogs are living in foster homes and have full access to our homes as part of the family. We feel that in order to adopt out a family pet, that pet needs to know what it is like to be part of a family. Personally, we (the Partnership) have no children, but one of the partners has a niece that is seven years old and she does come handle the pets so they will be used to being around and handled by children. The other partner has a number of cats in the house as well as a 93# American Bulldog so they will be tested for placement in a cat home as well situations with larger dogs. We do our best to socialize all pets in our care as much as possible to make for an easier transition into your home. Please take a moment and look at the pets we have for adoption . . .you might just find that special one out there that will steal your heart away. Pets are available for viewing by appointment only, as they are in our homes. However, an application needs to be filled out and approved prior to an appointment being set up.

    Adopting a friend

We operate through a foster home network as we have no shelter. This allows us to give you better information about the animal in a home situation. If you are interested in one of our animals, we send you an application and, once approved, make arrangements for you to meet and greet the animal(s) that we have for adoption. The adoption process will not be completed until you meet the animal and fall totally in love for life.

All animals are UTD on vaccinations, including rabies, are heartworm checked, and altered. NOTE: Puppies are not heartworm tested and sometimes are not old enough to receive a rabies vaccination. This, then, becomes the responsibility of the new family. All animals are on Heartgard and Frontline from the time they enter our program.

Please keep in mind that we are not looking to "get rid of" or "find a fast home" for our foster animals; we are looking for the best possible home for each and every one of our animals. So, while you will, we are sure, provide a good and loving home, the foster parent may find another application that better suits the needs of that particular animal. All animals are evaluated and their needs assessed prior to making an effort to place them.

I understand that I am not guaranteed an animal by filling out an application.

Jarnee Gehrke, of One Shep at a Time in North Carolina, has shared this --

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

      I rescued a human today.

      A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

      1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful
2 Give me time to understand what it is you want of me.
      3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
      4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
      5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
      6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
      7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
      8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
      9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
      10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.
Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters. We do not have to wait for Heaven, to be surrounded by hope, love, and joyfulness. It is here on earth and has four legs!
