Please Support our Work at Dogs Deserve Better

Your donations WILL save lives! They will fund community education and action programs, provide housetraining tips and tools for dogs so that they may live in the home, and fences so that they may safely go outside (when funding permits). We rescue and foster chained dogs that are given up by the owner and find a loving new home for them. We spay/neuter all rescues, as well as deworm and immunize. Our mission is to continually put the dog's welfare above all else, and strive to in any way possible make his/her life better. You can be a part of all that! The goals of Dogs Deserve Better comprise the following six principals: advocate and become a voice for dogs living chained or penned outside; educate society to evolve a higher ethical and moral standard for the treatment of dogs living under these conditions; meet with caretakers of dogs chained outside to advocate on behalf of the dogs and discuss other options available to them; fence yards to improve the quality of life for these dogs; provide low-cost or no-cost house training for dogs whose caretakers wish to bring them into the home; temporarily foster and find new homes for dogs whose caretakers wish them to have a better life but are unwilling or unable to provide that for them.

Please Help Fund our Organization

It's a large undertaking, and we need your help today. Any donations you make will be tax deductible.

Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Training Center

Dogs Deserve Better, now in our 8th year of advocating for chained and penned dogs, has started planning for a Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Training Center for formerly chained and penned dogs. In our efforts for these dogs, we are currently fostering and rehoming as many as 700-1000 dogs per year. When working with dogs who’ve spent their lives outside, our biggest task is to train them to live inside the home with the family. With that in mind, it is not in the dog’s best interest for us to build a typical shelter. We must be working to housetrain the dogs and teach them the ways of inside living. So we will build a more advanced facility with living areas, training areas, humane education room. To that end, we visualize a center that will house 16-24 dogs at a time, in 2-3 separate living areas. Each dog will have access to inside and outside areas, and they will be trained with the other dogs and trainers each day. Current estimated budget is 1.9 million dollars, if we can get the land donated. We are open to exploring options of building the center in any state in the country, so if you have land which you think might suite our purposes and you're willing to let us look at the possibility, please contact us immediately at 814.941.7447. We are seeking bequest donations, as well as donations of at least 10 acres of land, hopefully somewhere within a hour or two of a major airport. Interested in helping a project of this magnitude get off the ground, even bear your name? Please call Tamira Ci Thayne, DDB founder, at 814.941.7447 if you can help. All major donations toward this center are welcome. If you’re a financial supporter of our work here at Dogs Deserve Better and you can’t give a larger amount for the center, the best way you can help to ensure we build the center and our dream is to continue your financial support for our normal daily operations, which includes vet care for rescued dogs, fencing for dogs brought into the home to live, and education materials for our efforts....if we cannot continue our normal daily operations we will not be here to start a center; so, continuing to support our daily operation budget is absolutely crucial and the best way to see our group vision become a reality! Thank you.

DDB has won numerous awards, including first place in the ASPCA/Chase Pet Protector Award, and most recently took seven spots in the 2010 American Dog Magazine Humanitarian Awards, including a first in Rescue Organization Saving Dogs and a first in Voice for Ending the Chaining of Dogs. We are the voice for chained and penned dogs, whose sadness speaks only through the eyes. As the days become years, many of these dogs sit, lay, eat, and defecate within the same 10-foot radius. Chained by the neck, they exist without respect, love, exercise, social interaction, and sometimes even basic nourishment. They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets. Chaining is not only inhumane for dogs, but has taken a severe toll on this nation’s children as well. In the period from October 2003 through today Feb 21st 2011, there have been at least 333 children killed or seriously injured by chained dogs across the country. Chained dogs, unsocialized with humans, can become very territorial of their tiny space, and any two year old who wanders into this space can be attacked and killed before adults can intervene. A recent attack in Texas in March, 2007 left 2 year old Carolina Sotello dead from head and neck wounds. She was attacked and killed by an unneutered male dog chained in the backyard, next to an unspayed female with puppies. Would you for one second choose to live the life of these dogs? No matter what reason is given, the bottom line is that it is NOT ok to chain a dog for life. Dogs should not have to live chained or penned as prisoners, yearning for a place in a family, craving acknowledgement, respect, and love. They DESERVE BETTER, and we as caretakers have the obligation to provide it for them. Please consider today how you can help the dogs in your neighborhood. If you see a chained dog or a penned dog daily, it is time to take action. Please join Dogs Deserve Better today in taking a stand against this mistreatment of dogs. Volunteer your time or start a branch of Dogs Deserve Better in your area. Become a member and help us prove there is strength in numbers. Help with community awareness by hanging posters, showing the chained dog video, wearing one of our colorful t-shirts, or applying a sticker or magnet to your window/car to educate and provoke thought in those around you. Place brochures and doorhangers throughout the community. Donate to our cause through the donations link or via snail mail. Take a stand when you see dogs living chained or penned. Speak gently to the caretakers, sharing your convictions and information about Dogs Deserve Better and ways they can improve life for their companion. If you are not comfortable approaching caretakers of chained dogs or penned dogs, use the doorhangers or send us the names and addresses of the caretakers and we will send information in the mail. You will remain anonymous. If you are here because you currently keep your dog chained or penned, we applaud your efforts to give him/her a better life. Browse the articles section for tips on housetraining and fencing. If you need help, contact us at info@dogsdeservebetter.org. We will help you. Start changing the way you and your community think about the chaining and penning of dogs today. Join Dogs Deserve Better to take a stand and make life right for all dogs everywhere! NO CHAINS!
