Who We Are
Central Ohio Sheltie Rescue is an 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping Shetland Sheepdogs in need and assisting with all-breed lost dog recovery. Our mission is to rehabilitate abandoned, lost, and unwanted Shelties to place them in loving forever homes. We are funded solely by public donations and staffed by volunteers. We serve central and southeastern Ohio, as well as numerous other areas through partnerships with other Sheltie rescues. COSR was founded in 2000.
The most visible job that Central Ohio Sheltie Rescue does is to take in shelties and rehabilitate them both medically and behaviorally before finding them a new “forever” home. We do our best to evaluate and get to know each and every dog in hopes of learning enough about that dog's habits, temperament, and needs to hopefully make the best decisions when it comes to placing that dog. It is our goal to match the right dog to the right home.
Adopting a friend
Please visit our website: www.centralohiosheltierescue.org
for more information and to complete an adoption contract. WE ONLY ADOPT WITHIN THE STATE OF OHIO.
We take our responsibility for these dogs seriously. Anyone wishing to adopt a dog from us must fill out an application - where we will ask for and check out your personal references and veterinary references. If you pass that screening, then we bring the dog over for a home visit. We watch to see how the dog responds in the home and to the entire family. We check to see where the dog will be living and if it’s a safe, healthy and clean environment for the dog. The whole time we are watching to see the interaction of the family members as well. Once everyone is settled in, the adoption can be completed if it’s the right match.
We do not believe the adoption process is complete when the contract is signed, and we take an active role in assisting our adopters. We follow up with the dogs and their owners and address questions, concerns, and needs. We like to think of our rescue as a growing family, and we are responsible for supporting that family. We encourage adopters to maintain contact and regularly invite adopters to events, including our annual reunion picnic. COSR also assumes responsibility for the dog for the life of the dog. If the adopter is no longer able to care for the dog as required by the adoption contact, COSR will reclaim the dog and assume permanent responsibility.
