PLEASE SPAY OR NEUTER
YOUR COMPANION ANIMALS!
This will save save millions of lives, and stop the killing in our nation's shelters. Six million healthy animals are euthanized in shelters each and every year simply for lack of homes. Friends of Felines Rescue Center and Earth Angels, Inc are striving to lower these numbers and to put an end to the suffering and unnecessary death of innocent animals.
Friends of Felines rescue center is a non-profit, cage free, no-kill feline care facility. Earth Angels is a low cost spay/neuter clinic serving all communities. Our goal is to adopt our kittens & cats into permanent loving indoor homes and to reduce homelessness, abuse, and euthanasia due to animal overpopulation. We operate solely on the kindness of private donations, and receive no local or federal government funding. If you would like to make a donation please feel free to call us.
Volunteer Giving
The Rescue Center is very blessed to have so many wonderful, dedicated volunteers. We are so grateful for each and every one of them. We have a saying that is painted on one of our doors; "It takes a village of volunteers to raise a kitty". We certainly have that village of volunteers!
We are always looking for more volunteers that may have just a few hours to donate on a weekly basis or even random hours here and there. If you are interested in joining our team of caregivers, please call!
"Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another."--Erma Bombeck
Our Mission Statements
Friends Of Felines Rescue Center
To provide a temporary home to orphaned, abandoned or abused felines. To carefully find loving, indoor homes where quality lifetime care is provided. To sterillize all F.F.R.C. cats/kittens before adoption to help control problems associated with feline over-population. To educate the public in responsible cat ownership.
Earth Angels Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic
To promote spaying and neutering of dogs and cats as a means of reducing overpopulation; thereby reducing euthanasia, homelessness, abuse and neglect.
To provide education about responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of pets.
Our Physical Structures
Our cats and kittens live together in a very clean and cat friendly center which has been designed for their comfort and convenience. They can run, climb trees, play whenever they wish and snuggle up with a friend for a nice afternoon nap. Our few cages are only used for brief periods of quarantine. Our main area consists of a large office room, four smaller rescue rooms; (June's Room, Kitty Campus, Cat's Corner, & Mewcomers), and a very large common area. All have colorful, comfy furniture, trees for climbing, comfortable beds & toys placed about, with over 270 feet of catwalks. We also have 2 outdoor enclosures; Kitty City is for main rescue "overflow" during our very busy and full kitten season and Cat's Cove is for permanent residents.
Earth Angels is located on the same property as Friends of Felines Rescue Center, but in a different building. It is a non-profit, low cost spay/neuter clinic for dogs and cats. Surgeries are performed by Dr. Cindy Thurston, DVM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Our clinic has a licensed vet technician and clinic assistant.
Our first surgery was performed May 2004. We have now performed over 9,400 spays and neuters! Earth Angels is committed to leading the way in correcting our area's overpopulation of dogs and cats.
Adopting a Cat
If you are looking for a spayed or neutered, healthy and happy cat or kitten give us a call and come visit us! The rescue center is located at the home of our director, Jacci Moss, so a call is appreciated before you come out. 419-393-2400. We have a simple adoption application and we require a signature on an adoption contract. We will go over our adoption process with you, ask you some specific questions about your desires in a pet, and turn you loose in the center. You can meet every cat we have available that day. You can also get a better understanding of how important it is to keep your cat indoors, and why we adopt to 100% indoor homes only. Learn the importance of regular vet care and lifetime flea prevention for all of your pets. Our cats & kittens are all given superior vet care and complete medical treatment- the cost to adopt a friend is only $80.00, but we spend about $200-$250 on each cat or kitten. The difference is made up with charitable donations from our wonderful supporters. The adoption fee covers spay/neuter, 2 leukemia tests, 2 leukemia vaccinations , 2-3 distemper vaccinations, 3 wormings and flea prevention is applied every single month they're with us, plus any medical care needed.
Before you bring your cat home
Make sure everyone in the household is prepared to care for your new pet. It will be your obligation to care for this pet for years to come. Have things ready BEFORE you bring your cat or kitten home! You will need such items as:
- Dry food in which the first ingredient listed is meat-preferably chicken. We recommend Iams, Purina One, Maxximum-any super premium brand, just check the label.
- Canned Food-we use a lot of Friskies brand. (See information below)
- Bowls-ceramic, glass, stainless steel (not plastic). Will need at least one each for water, dry food, and canned food.
- Litterbox (see information below)
- Litter-we use scoopable only. It's the best way to keep a clean litterbox.
- Brush/comb
- Toys!
- Pet carrier or crate (to take kitten or cat home and for veterinarian trips)
Feeding
- Have clean water available at ALL times for your cat. Be sure to wash food and water dishes frequently-bacteria can build up rapidly in them.
- At the rescue center, we leave dry cat and kitten food out 24/7, which is known as free feeding. Any cat under 12 months should have dry KITTEN food. Over 12 months, feed dry CAT food.
- Also at the rescue center, we feed canned food, per the advice of our veterinarians. Kittens under 3 months and our geriatric cats 12 years and older are fed a small amount 4 times daily. Kittens between 3-5 months are fed a small amount 3 times daily. Kittens and cats 5 months up to 12 years of age are fed a small amount twice a day.
- Cow's milk can cause diarrhea! Many cats are lactose intolerant.
Litterbox
The #1 reason that cats are relinquished to shelters for euthanasia is for inappropriate elimination issues. Once a cat begins to have these issues, it is VERY hard to correct. Following these guidelines can help insure that you will never have to experience this heartbreak.
- A litterbox should be accessible at all times.
- If you have more than one floor in your home, make sure you have a litterbox for each level.
- One per each cat, plus one is a good guideline to follow when deciding how many litterboxes to have.
- Cats do not like messy, smelly litterboxes and tend to not use them unless they are cleaned often. Litterboxes MUST be cleaned at least once and preferably twice per day.
- Be sure litterboxes are not too small. They need room to get in and turn around. A kitten won't stay small for long, so buy litterboxes to fit an adult. Rubbermaid totes make excellent litterboxes!
- Keep litterboxes in quiet, low traffic areas. Cats like privacy!
- Many cats do not like lids on their litterboxes or heavily perfumed litter. The best way to avoid litterbox odors is to scoop frequently.
Grooming
Brush your cat regurlarly! This will help reduce hairballs and shedding. Cats stay fairly clean as they groom themselves for hours a day, so a bath is rarely needed.
Feliz Navidad-her story of grace and forgiveness.
Her name says it all-Feliz Navidad Grace Rhoda; Feliz Navidad because she came at Christmas, Grace because she's full of grace and forgiveness and Rhoda because she was frozen to the road.
This precious gift came to our rescue center after having been frozen and stuck flat on her side on the road for at least 5 hours. A day after heavy snow and ice, a man who had seen her several times was on the last drive-by when she raised her head. He gingerly pried her off the road and brought her to Friends Of Felines Rescue Center with hypothermia and severe neurological problems. Medical care started immediately. Most amazing of all, her purr motor ran continuously for the first forty-eight hours!
The first day, she couldn't swallow. The second day, she still couldn't walk. Then, on the third day, she showed that she was a survivor by eating. The fourth day, she tried to stand and then on the fifth day she started walking, but in tight little circles.
Today, Feliz runs, climbs, and plays-still occasionally spinning in left-handed circles...and she still purrs like crazy!
Friends Of Felines Rescue Center would like to honor Feliz by setting up a new fund called FELIZ FUND. All money donated will go towards cats with extra special medical needs that come to FFRC. If your would like to contribute, please send your donation to

What is a typical day at FFRC like?
Every day is different and always busy. Here’s an idea of what happens in a “typical” day!
- 80-100 cats on site.
- Walls are washed daily in all rescue rooms.
- Floors are swept and mopped three times daily.
- Almost every surface is washed with a disinfectant daily.
- 40-45 cans of cat food, 15 pounds of dry cat/kitten food and
30 pounds of scoopable litter is used daily.
- If it’s a surgery day at the Earth Angel Clinic, up to
20 spays or castrations may be done.
- 18-22 loads of laundry will be washed, dried, folded and put
away. Every piece of bedding is washed daily.
- 50-60 phone calls will be received.
On any given day, there will probably be adoptions, incoming cats and kittens, baths done on all new arrivals, the treatment board is checked daily to keep up on any medical needs and updated weekly from a very large file of medical records, toenails may be trimmed, ears cleaned, weights recorded, bookkeeping to keep up on, bills to pay, fundraising projects/public relations events worked on, supplies ordered, shopping trips for intown items....the list goes on and on!!
Donate
Friends Of Felines Rescue Center and Earth Angels both rely upon your generous donations to continue to help cats and kittens and to keep our costs associated with spaying and neutering as low as possible. Consider a donation of any size-every bit helps! Also, did you know you can donate your aluminum cans? You can bring them to us, or you can take them to Werlor's recycling Center on Ralston Ave. in Defiance and tell them to credit the F.F.R.C. account. We are still asking for Chief Supermarket register receipts-good from any store. Chief very generously gives the rescue center .05% cash back from all the receipts we turn in, which adds up to a BIG help for the cats and kittens! If you can't make it out to drop them off, feel free to drop them in the mail to Friends of Feline Rescue Center 14597 Power Dam Rd. Defiance, OH 43512
Where there’s a WILL……..there is a way……
to continue your support of FFRC. A gift to FFRC in your will can provide many lifetimes of care for the felines. Please consider a generous bequest that will allow many more cats to have a second chance at life. Thank you.
FFRC HAS A PLAN!
To help us achieve our goals of saving lives and ending suffering, we need your support:
In increasing our financial contributions
In expanding our base of volunteers
In promoting adoptions
In spreading the word to your friends, family and neighbors
With your support, here’s what we plan to do:
Continue to take in as many felines as we can
Increase our adoptions
Decrease the number of animals in need by continuing to spay/neuter ALL felines before adoption
Educate the public in the importance of spaying/neutering, proper diets, flea prevention, importance of cat health, cat socialization, etc.
Just passin' it along.....
- -->If you or someone you know is in honest need of cat food or dog food, please call us. We have resources to help
- -->If you have adopted a cat from F.F.R.C. remember that, per your contract, if you can no longer take care of or keep your cat for whatever reason, he or she should be returned to the rescue center.
- -->The volunteers and I love what we do here at the Rescue Center. Our full intentions are to only adopt out healthy cats and kittens-their best interest is truly the highest priority for us. We realize that occasionally a cat or kitten may become ill after adoption. From the minute a cat arrives at the Rescue Center to the moment they are adopted, we work very hard on their health and their happiness levels. Our intentions are true, in that we really do care about every cat that comes our way, never intending any harm.
- -->Fleas, fleas, fleas...'tis always flea season. Only use products that are recommended by your veterinarian for flea prevention. We sell ProMeris for dogs and cats through our Earth Angels Clinic.
- -->Remember, nothing takes the place of a physical exam by your full-service veterinarian for your cats and dogs. Regular preventative care is very important.
