ALL DOGS AT STAR-MAR RESCUE ARE SPECIAL. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AT ALL OUR DOGS. Please research the breed of dog you are interested in. Star-Mar strives to place their dogs in permanent homes. Adopters should be aware of the acitivity level and other characteristics of the breed or breed mix they are interested in so the dog or puppy of their choice fits into their lifestyle. If you are looking at a puppy mill dog please do some research on these dogs to better understand their needs. To be fair to the dogs, adopters must be committed to trying to work through adjustment problems possible with any rescue dog. Teaching a dog the rules of your particular household cannot be done in a matter of a few days. Please consider and commit to this BEFORE taking home a Star-Mar dog.

Star-Mar is an avid supporter and participate in the commercial breeder/puppy mill legislation in Ohio. Every year Star Mar rescues many puppy mill dogs; retired breeders and puppies left over from excessive breeding. We are saddened by the physical condition of these dogs, lack of socilaization, the ignoring of breed standards and their substandard living conditions. For example; I picked up a retired breeder, 7 years old, born in the mill and had produced many litters of puppies. She had brought thousands of dollars to the commercial breeder/miller yet she didn't even warrant a name, nor human companionship or even to place her feet on the ground. "Goose" had spent her entire life in an 18X18 inch wire bottomed cage. She came home with me that day and never left. She must have known that she was missing something all those years because she is the perfect little dog. After owning her for only 6 weeks she passed her Canine Good Citizen Test and her Therapy Dog International test and is now a registered therapy dog. Goose has been with me for 6 years. She has been my trusted companion, my therapy dog, avid hunter and farm dog extrodinar. There are many dogs like Goose that never make it out, never know the joy of human companionship, are bred every heat cycle, who are merely considered a cash crop and sold at auctions like cattle. You can help. You must help! You can be their voice. Your efforts can stop their suffering. Don't purchase puppies from pet stores which are the largest source for puppy mill puppies. Who We Are
Star-Mar Rescue is a member of Rescue Alliance of Hairless and Other Breeds, Inc. ( www.rescuealliance.org) a 501-C-3, non profit organization. Star-Mar Rescue is run by Martha Leary, assisted by dedicated foster providers, friends and family and is located on 26 rural acres in beautiful Wayne County Ohio. Aside from placing our own dogs, Star-Mar helps to place hundreds of dogs every year into other rescues by assisting in pulling dogs from shelters and from commercial breeding kennels/puppy mills. Star-Mar Rescue is an firm believer in never buying dogs or puppies from commercial breeders/puppy mills (or off of Craig's List). All puppy mill retired breeders or puppies listed on Star-Mar's petfinder site were surrendered to us with no payment to the breeder and are brucellosis tested. If you are interested in a specific dog or puppy you see on petfinder please ask that rescue if they purchased that dog or puppy from a breeder (or from Craig's List) and if so then ask yourself, "is this really rescue"? If rescues are financially supporting puppy mills then they become part of the problem and hinder the solution. If you are looking for a specific breed that you can't find on petfinder then please find a responsible breeder who breeds to standard, socializes their dogs/puppies and follows a breeding program that enhances the mental and physical characteristics of the breed. Be part of the solution in curbing inhumane puppy mill breeding and our country's unwanted pet population by making a informed choice in selecting your next dog or puppy and always spay or neuter.
Adopting a friend
If you have taken the time to consider adding a dog to your family we would like you to know that we have the advantage of being able to expose our dogs to many different situations; children, strangers, other dogs, cats and livestock, inside living and outside living, fenced and not fenced. We are confident that Star-Mar is able to give the potential adopters broad information on each dog so that a good choice can be made. All dogs and puppies leave spayed or neutered (regardless of age), are heart worm negative, have a negative fecal and have all their shots including a current rabies. Puppy mill dogs will have a Brucellosis test. The adoption fee from Star-Mar Rescue is $200. Most dogs will be placed within a comfotable driving distance of Wooster to enable home visits although each applicant willl be considered on their own merit. All other dogs and outside cats in your household must have a current rabies, dogs do not have to be on commercial heart worm preventative but must have annual heart worm testing done and ALL dogs and cats must be spayed/neutered regardless of age!
