ALL DOGS AT STAR-MAR RESCUE ARE SPECIAL. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AT ALL OUR DOGS. Please take the time to research the breed of dog you are interested in. Star-Mar strives to place their dogs in permanent homes. Adopters should be aware of the acitivity level, energy level and other characteristics of the breed or breed mix they are interested. If looking at a puppy mill dog please do some research on these dogs to better understand their needs. To be fair to the dogs, adopters must be committed to trying to work through adjustment problems possible with any rescue dog. Teaching a dog the rules of your particular household cannot be done in a matter of a few days. Please consider this before taking a dog home.
News
Every year Star Mar rescues many puppy mill dogs; retired breeders and puppies left over from excessive breeding. We are saddened by the physical condition of these dogs, lack of socilaization, the ignoring of breed standards and their living conditions that most would consider to be substandard. For an example; Star Mar attended a Amish benefit auction for an Amish school. Along with auctioning quilts, hand made furniture and homemade yummies were dogs. We purchased several in hopes to remove them from the puppy mill cycle. One of the dogs was a 7 year old Rat Terrier. We bought her for $10. I spoke with the breeder who had owned her. He said that he had her since she was 8 weeks, that he had breed her twice a year and that she had lived in a wire cage off the ground. She "was a good breeder" but he "needed to clear out some breeding stock" and thought that it was "better to get $10 for her than shoot her." He had made $1000s of dollars off of her yet she never warranted a name nor human companionship, just the bare minimum of food, water and shelter. Goose came home with me that day. She must have known that she was missing something all those years because she is the perfect little dog. Not to say that she isn't terribly damaged and works hard to be okay but yet after owning her for only 6 weeks she passed her Canine Good Citizen Test and her Therapy Dog International test and is now a registered therapy dog. There are many dogs like Goose that never make it out, never know the joy of human companionship, are bred every heat cycle, who are merely considered a cash crop and sold at auctions like cattle. You can help. You must help! You can be their voice. Your efforts can stop their suffering. Don't purchase puppies from pet stores which are the largest source for puppy mill puppies. Who We Are
Star-Mar Rescue is a not for profit LLC registered with the State of Ohio run by Sharry Starner and Martha Leary. Star-Mar is located on a 140 acre equine breeding and training farm called BrookStar Farm. Fifteen acres is fenced for the dogs which includes the barn. Our dogs are around people all day every day. They are exposed to other dogs, cats, goats, horses and foals and are used to people coming and going from the facility.
Aside from placing our own dogs, Star-Mar pulls dogs from high kill shelters and houses them temporarily for other rescues to take into their programs. Many dogs loose their lives because they do not have the luxury of time in the shelters that allows rescues to put together transports and find fosters to save these dogs. Star-Mar Rescue has helped many dogs get into rescue by giving them the time that is needed.
Adopting a friend
If you have taken the time to consider adding a dog to your family we would like you to know that we have the advantage of being able to expose our dogs to many different situations; children, strangers, other dogs, cats and livestock, inside living and outside living, fenced and not fenced. We are confident that Star-Mar is able to give the potential adopters broad information on each dog so that a good choice can be made.
All dogs leave spayed or neutered, are heart worm negative and have all their shots including a current rabies. All Star-Mar Rescue dogs can be returned at any time for any reason. Adoption from Star-Mar Rescue is $150. Full refunds are given when dogs are returned due to not fitting into the adopters family or lifestyle. We try hard to avoid this by interviewing our applicants. Most dogs will be placed within a comfotable driving distance of Wooster to enable home visits and if returning is necessary, it can be done easily. Each applicant willl be considered on their own merits. All other dogs and cats in your household must be up to date on all shots, on heart worm preventative and spayed/neutered unless you have proof of showing AKC. Please e-mail learymjri@aol.com for an application.
