 MAMA---FORMER MILL DOG
Written by the rescue who saved Mama from a Holmes County breeder.Mama has been our biggest surprise yet. We picked up 9 dogs from a USDA puppy mill that was going out of business. These were the last nine dogs; 2 old adults and 7 older puppies. We were told that there was a 9 year old breeding Cocker. We were sure that she would be mean as a snake. We would take her but were sure we would have to humanely euthanize her. SURPRISE! Mama is one of the sweetest old girls you will ever meet. She had an untreated thyroid problem and therefore she is obese, her teeth have been worn down to nothing from years of chewing on wire and were green from lack of care. Her ears had been infected for years and were glued to the side of her head from all the gunk that had oozed out of them over the years. She had matted hair and feces packed between the pads of her feet that were hard as rocks and had sored the sides of her pads. She has several fatty tumors and a fairly large, hard tumor on her upper chest. She sat quietly as we bathed and shaved her, trimmed her feet, cleaned her ears and cut the chain that held the USDA license from around her neck. We brought her in on Thursday night and Friday morning she had her teeth cleaned and her ear flushed. She has a heart murmur - the vet said it was most likely due to years of bacteria on her teeth - and the hard tumor is most likely cancer but is to close to her juggler to remove and her heart to weak to take the surgery. Well no one has told Mama that. She trucks all over the farm, goes for walks in the woods with the Jacks and is bound and determined not to be left out of anything. She has very little arthritis and is always happy, happy, happy. We can't say if she has 2 months or 2 years, but we can say that she deserves a home. This is a dog that wants to lie at your feet as you eat your dinner and read the paper. She wants to be there when you go to sleep at night and be there when you wake up in the morning. She deserves that. She's spent her life in a wire kennel spitting out litter after litter of puppies, uncared for, unnamed and unloved.
PLEASE HELP PASS THE PUPPY MILL BILL IN OHIO!3> The proposed House Bill 223 or Senate Bill 173 (Puppy Mill Bill) is necessary in Holmes County as well as the entire state of Ohio. In summary:
The bill proposes that a person who wants to operate a kennel needs to apply for the license. They need to be insured or bonded to operate with the amount paid corresponding with the amount of breeding dogs they have; the kennels will be inspected on a continuous basis; fines and/or relinquishing of dogs and operation of kennel incurred if violations occur; need to keep paper trail of dogs sold.
The bill proposes standard care such as big enough cages; nutritious food; fresh unfrozen water; vet care; grooming so nails won’t grown too long and matting does not occur in fur; shade provided from direct sunlight May through Sept.; adequate housing to bear elements; natural or artificial light during daytime hours; cage that is free from accumulated urine or feces which is beyond that of a 12 hour period; flooring material that does not cause injury to dog’s feet; dog that is suspected of a contagious disease should be kept away from other dogs; clean whelping box; protection from parasites; protection from heartworm; euthanization by a vet if needed; cannot beat or brutalize a dog.
We have personally fostered many mill dogs and not one of them came to us without some kind of issue that didn’t need attention whether it health or mental. This bill is very doable for all breeders. The bottom line is that they will have to be bonded or insured to operate which will cut into their revenue. It is all about the money for them and not about producing a quality “product”.
Many Holmes County residents want this bill to pass. There are currently over 480 breeding kennels in Holmes alone. With so many shelters across the US having to euthanize thousands of homeless or unwanted dogs, it is unnecessary to have so many high volume breeding kennels. In fact, 1 out of every 4 dogs that are in shelters are pure breed. It doesn’t go unsaid that these shelters cost the county and taxpayers money. We have rescued many purebred and “designer” dogs from the Holmes County Dog Pound. We are not against breeding, but we are against the high volume breeding that goes on in Holmes. There are many reputable breeders that only have a handful of breeding dogs. These people breed dogs according to the breed standard, temperament and health. The majority of Holmes County breeders strictly breed to make money, therefore producing puppies that have many health issues, defects, look nothing like the breed standard and have questionable temperaments.
Above is a “quality product” of a Holmes County breeder. If the bill was law, this gal could have lived a better life. Remember, this bill helps protect the adult breeder dogs that live their lives in a cage regarded as livestock. How many chickens, cows, pigs, etc, do you see wagging their tails and “talking” when it’s feeding time? Bottom line: Dogs are companion animals.
WE APPRECIATE YOU READING THIS and ask you to support the PUPPY MILL BILL (HB 223 or SB 173). Please, if you love dogs, ever had a dog, know people who like dogs or just want to help, go to www.columbusdogconnection.com to read more about the proposed bill. PLEASE SEND EMAILS to all dog lovers and especially email our county commissioners hcc@co.holmes.oh.us as well as Ohio representatives and senators http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/search.cfm#reps_zip and ask them to support the bill. With more and more kennels springing up throughout this county, it is imperative that regulations become a reality. THE DOGS WILL THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!3>
