June 20, 2009 - SPECIAL NOTICE:
FIDO’s Companion had an unfortunate situation this past weekend with one of our dogs we were hoping to successfully place in a new home. We set up specific guidelines weeks ago with the family who were planning to adopt him about how to make the transition to their home the most successful. This is a good dog, but a dog we have had in our rescue for almost 1 year because of his high energy level, his need for strong leadership and some resource guarding issues he has displayed.
FIDO’s Companion would never place a dog into a home that we did not feel comfortable having in our own homes. By the same token, we expect that the people who look to adopt from us will take the care and welfare of our dogs as seriously as we do.
The specific guidelines for this adoption process included both family members being present for a training session with one of our dog trainers the first night of the trial adoption starting which was provided at our expense. It included organizing their weekend so they would be home with the dog to bond with him and would start to establish leadership. It included following our trainers recommendations for proper exercise and leadership establishment. It included buying certain basic care items for the dog such as a leash and crate prior to taking him into their home.
Unfortunately, the family did not follow thru with their verbal commitment to our rescue on doing the things listed above. Therefore, we opted to take the dog back into our care after speaking with our entire Board. We believe our number one priority in our rescue work is placing dogs into homes that are ready and willing to do what is necessary to make the lifetime commitment of adopting a dog “work”. The last thing we want or need is for these once homeless dogs to be carelessly adopted and then returned at the first sign of a minor behavior issue or lack of basic obedience.
We regret if our actions hurt anyone’s feelings or if this will cause our rescue unnecessary negative media attention or ill will in the community. We are and always will be committed to finding the right fit in an adoptive home for all of our dogs.

Who We Are.....A 501(c)3 Non-Profit Rescue
FIDO's Companion, formerly called Cleveland K911, is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Rescue Organization. We are a small, closely held rescue made up of volunteers dedicated to saving one life at a time and providing our rescued dogs with top quality care until we can find them a new forever home. FIDO's Companion believes that the value of what we do is not in the Quantity of animals we save, but in the Quality of the new life we provide to them.
We fully vet all of our dogs including spay & neuter.
We operate out of Avon, Ohio. We focus primarily on rescuing dogs from the Lorain County Dog Kennel in Elyria, Ohio before they are put to sleep. We also work to educate the public about humane treatment of animals and the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
News.........VISIT OUR WEBSITE at www.fidoscompanion.com
and view the list of upcoming events you can meet our dogs at this summer!
Unfortuantely we are unable to take any owner relinquishments at this time. Our foster homes and boarding facilities are being dedicated to dogs saved from high kill shelters.
We are tremendously grateful to the many individuals and organizations who have helped us find homes for our rescued dogs. Your hard work and dedication to the animals is a very admirable achievement.
FIDO's Companion is always in need of more volunteers who can help with transports. We also desperately need dog experienced families who can foster the numerous dogs we rescue each year. Any volunteers interested in walking dogs will be greatly appreciated. Please contact us at: mreichlin@roadrunner.com
Adopting a friend
If you wish to adopt one of our great pets, go to our website at www.fidoscompanion.com and submit an application on our adoption page. Once your application is submitted and approved, we can set up a time for you to meet the dog(s) you are interested in.
We do not operate on a first come, first serve basis. We strive to find the most compatible home for our dogs and look for adopters who are certain they want to make a lifetime commitment to our rescued dogs. We also require a home visit as a part of our adoption process. If we do not have an animal that interests you, we may be able to help put you in contact with the many other organizations with which we network.
ADOPTION FEES - Individual fees apply based on each dog rescued.

Our Featured Pet
FIDO's Companion rescued Trinity from a local pound. Not only did she just deliver a litter of puppies that no one knows what came of, she is terribly emaciated. Her photo stunned me when I first saw it and I can only be glad we could find a way to help her.
Trinity is now resting safely at our vets and will be there for at least 1 month until she puts on some weight and can be spayed. She is est. to be around 1 1/2 years old and has delivered multiple litters of puppies. We feel she is a mix of American Staffordshire Terrier and Vizsula. She only weighs 35 lbs and that is with having engorged tits filled with milk. God only knows what she would weigh if she was not filled with the milk. She should be at min. 50 lbs according to our vets. She is heartworm negative but loaded with worms that she has been treated for.
Trinity is so very sweet and loving with humans and is friendly with other dogs. How could a dog who has been so abused be so trusting?? All I can say is dogs are resilient and forgiving creatures......wish I could say such nice things about human kind.
FIDO's Companion can use donations to care for Trinity so she can get all the medical treatment she needs. PLEASE DONATE!!!!
*****************TRINITY'S POEM:
How did my Life Become This? My Life was Worth Nothing Until Now.
My life was worth nothing to the people who owned me. I received no basic care, food, water and just was used to breed puppies for them to sell.
My life was worth nothing to the people who found me on the side of the road skin and bones and clearly in need of medical care. They just dumped me off at the dog pound.
My life was worth nothing at the pound. I had to lay on a concrete floor with my poor body condition and in such discomfort waiting to meet my fate in the Gas Chamber.
My life was worth nothing to so many, but it was just a few who made my life have some meaning.
A volunteer at the pound who brought me a soft bed to lie on and gave me treats.
A group of rescuers who worked hard to get me released to their care so I could be treated medically.
My life now has a purpose.....I was rescued from the pound and taken to the vets so I could be cared for.
My life now has a purpose.....I was rescued and have a full belly, a soft bed to sleep on, a constant bowl of food, and a spay scar so I will never be used to breed again.
My Life was Worth Nothing, but now my life has a purpose....I am meant to LIVE.
