PLEASE note that we don't make appointments for folks to meet the dogs, until we have an approved application, so that we 'know' who is coming to someone's home. Thanks for your understanding.
PLEASE DO NOT BRING A RETRACTABLE LEASH with you, when you come to get your dog. Bring 4 ot 6' nylon.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, Kathleene H and Allie B, and Teri B., and Kathy M, for your gifts, which make our lives much better!
MOST OF OUR DOGS ARE 'PUPPY MILL' DOGS. PLEASE READ DESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY. THANK YOU! If you are new to the world of rescue, for the purpose of finding a new best friend, welcome! Please do consider adopting from a pound, or a rescue organization, and never, never, buy a puppy in a petstore!
PLEASE DO be respectful of our and all others' rescued animals and homes. Please, if you 'stop on the way' here...at the dog park, another rescue or public shelter, or even a breeder's place before you arrive here? TELL US and give us the opportunity to 'de-bug' you, and your family. Please do not take the chance on bringing parvo into our homes, to infect our dogs and puppies.
We go to great lengths to avoid infecting dogs with parvo, so that our dog....your dog that you adopt will be healthy and safe. Don't sabotage our efforts. Thank you.
Shaggy Dog Rescue, Ohio was formed to help the dogs on death row at our local pounds. Adopting a dog from SDRO will free up a foster home so we can save more dogs.
We do as often as possible continue to pull and save kill pound dogs, but we also accept 'puppy mill' or breeder dogs into our rescue...dogs that are old, or weren't 'productive', or puppies that were not ordered to be sold at a pet store.
NOTES ON REQUIRED APPLICATION DEPOSIT:
For those listings noted with "Application Deposit Required", please read....Due to the high number of approved applications which do not result in adoptions, but still use a tremondous amount of volunteer time, we are now asking a modest deposit to accompany applications for puppies and young dogs (as noted).
If you submit an application, please send also a paypal payment of $25.00 to rainbowjudy@yahoo.com . Your deposit will be returned if: We cannot approve you to adopt, or if we do not give you an answer as to approval within four days (assuming that we can reach your references).
Your deposit will remain with us, if: You are approved, it will go toward the adoption fee; if the applicant changes his or her mind about applying, OR if the applicant is approved, but does not actually adopt the puppy or dog within a week. (We might discuss a deposit on the dog, to hold it of absolutely essential).
If you are interested in any of our dogs, please email us for an adoption application. Our adoption fees vary depending on expenses, age, and breed.... DEPENDING ON AGE, that fee will include spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm tests, worming, and rabies shots. (Our veterinarians do not believe in, or perform pediatric altering surgeries, and puppies cannot have rabies shots prior to 14 weeks of age.) Purebreds dogs with AKC papers, if we acquire them at auction, are adopted at a higher fee.
We require that all dogs and cats in a home be altered before we can approve adoption of one of our dogs.
Everyone knows how bad the economy is, and how difficult it is now, financially, for SO many Americans. Rescue organizations, like everyone else, are having very hard times because families not only aren't adopting, so many are having to give up their own pets.
Rescues are 'stacking up' dogs, puppies are growing older, the adult and old dogs still need to eat, be medicated, have their flea and heartworm prevention.
Breeder turnover dogs are flowing out of commercial breeder properties at a now astounding rate, and we are very, very hard put to take them in. Sometimes it is a matter of having just gas in one's car (or not) to move these dogs to rescuers who have room for them. Even small donations can make a difference, as to whether unsold puppies or non-prolific adults can GET to a rescuer's home, or will simply have to be shot or drowned because no one wants them.
If you could foster a dog now and then, please write. All applicants to foster will have to complete the routine adoption application, have a home visit done, and MUST have a secure fence attached to their home. We ask that anyone interested live in Portage, Summit, Stark, or Tuscarawas County.
If you can not adopt or foster, what about sponsoring a pet? The cost of rescue involves much more than just the veterinary care. Food, vaccines, collars, leashes, heartworm and flea preventative, replacement crates, pillows, laundering bedding .... it all adds up very quickly. We also spend a good deal of gas money on transports. Paypal donations can be made to rainbowjudy@yahoo.com . Please note if you would like your donation used for a particular listed pet. Thanks!
We are not a shelter or a kennel. We are a small group of people who dedicate our hard-earned money and spare time to saving dogs from euthanasia. Our dogs are all housed in our homes where they are evaluated to determine the type of homes they need. At this time, testing with cats and kids is problematic. Adoptions are NOT based on first-come-first-served. We try to place our dogs in the homes that best suit their needs. We can best answer your questions via email, and usually respond in less than 24 hours.
Our volunteers make it possible to what we do best -- save lives. If you are interested in joining an animal rescue group, just browse the shelters and rescues on Petfinder. You'll be sure to find several who would appreciate your help. :
