Mission
Celebrating animals is our passion. The Humane Society of Greater Akron is dedicated to alleviating animal suffering, preventing and investigating animal cruelty, protecting the welfare of animals and providing quality adoption services.

Today the Humane Society of Greater Akron focuses most of its resources on rescuing animals, restoring and maintaining their health and finding new homes for them.

A second important component of our mission is providing community education. For example, we present classes in responsible pet care, animal behavior, our mission, and Humane Officer activities in Summit County. Audiences include schools, scout troops, churches, seniors groups, community organizations. We are available to local governments as trusted advisors on all animal welfare issues. Demand for our education services far outweighs our resources. Our objective is to obtain funding to expand education services for the community.

The third component of our mission is providing outreach programs for the community. Our focus is restoring and maintaining animals to the lives of people who would befit from having animal contact and companionship. We recognize animals are therapeutic, so we want to make them available to people who are ill, disabled, incarcerated and lonely, needing companionship. We also recognize the value of animals in helping change behavior and in learning new skills. We actively supplement community programs for the disabled, community programs encouraging reading, character development programs and programs for the elderly. We need to greatly increase funding so we may expand our Community Outreach Programs.

Vision
The Humane Society of Greater Akron aspires to be a model animal welfare organization reflecting the values of our community by eradicating abuse and neglect of all living creatures and promoting their compassionate care and adoption through collaborative efforts.

Community education is the focus for achieving our vision. We intend to build a Center for Humane Education in Summit County. Through education we will fundamentally change animal welfare in our community. Once the community need is understood, resources will be made available. The Humane Society of Greater Akron?s major challenge is communicating the need effectively.

Adopting a Friend
Throughout the year, the Humane Society provides a temporary home for lovable, adorable puppies and kittens, as well as faithful and devoted adult cats and dogs. These animals have received medical attention, have been wormed, had their basic shots, been spayed or neutered (if old enough) and are just waiting for a permanent home with a caring owner. When you are ready to share your home and your heart with a pet, we urge you to visit the Humane Society of Greater Akron first. Each of our adoptable pets is sure to bring joy to its new home.
