Happy Ending: Gabi, aka "Scout"

In August of 2009, ASB responded to a hoarding situation in upper Manhattan. We found at least a dozen cats abandoned in an empty, filthy apartment. That day we took two of them, and a little at a time the city's animal control helped us empty the apartment. We rescued about nine or so from this apartment through the ACC in the weeks after that.

Gabi is one of those first two removed from that horrible situation. A kind soul and dear friend to ASB fostered him in New Jersey, and saw him through months of illness and tough times. Today he is healthy, happy, and living permanently with his foster mom, who has renamed him Scout. We wish you many years of happiness and peace together!

ASB - GIVING HOPE TO THOSE LEFT BEHIND

We Survived a Terrible Hoarding Situation

With an estimated 900 - 2000 cases of animal hoarding in the U.S. every year, and a quarter million animals falling victim, we found ourselves coming to the rescue of several cats in a terrible hoarding situation.

We became heavily involved in this rescue effort when we learned that several cats, approximately 22, had been abandoned in an East Harlem apartment by their owner after she abruptly moved out of the country and left them all behind. Forced to fend for themselves, these brave kitties somehow survived on their own in an empty apartment in the middle of summer with very little attention or food. With the lease running out and their futures uncertain, we immediately took action. Although we are a very small organization, we managed to save more than half of these needy cats, both in the apartment and from the City Shelter's death row, with very little funding and space. Luckily, these gorgeous kitties pictured, while not altogether unscathed, will never know the real danger that they were facing at the city shelter.

The rescue of abandoned and homeless cats and kittens is an ongoing effort. Unfortunately, our hearts are much bigger than our resources. Please do help if you can so we can continue helping cats in need.

WHO WE ARE

We are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit no-kill animal rescue/adoption organization and information clearinghouse. We have no formal shelter, instead, our cats reside in our homes until we can find a suitable home for them. We spend a lot of time interacting with our rescues to give them a lot of personalized attention, establish their personality traits, and tend to their health, physical and emotional well being. We take great care to ensure that our rescues will be going to a good home where everyone will be happy. We have a holistic philosophy with a two-pronged mission: a) continuing to participate in the myriad, ongoing rescue and adoption work of all of the similarly-involved local groups as well as: b) raising awareness for Humans to be better, more responsible, committed and informed animal care-givers. This includes information on holistic vet care, quality food and inclusion of Pet Trusts in people's Advance Directives.
