Dugan is our Special Needs Pet. Dugan has been at the shelter since January 12, 2009 and he is a very sad dog indeed! He is a 2-5 year old, neutered Boxer. He is everything a good Boxer should be - happy, friendly, boisterous and did we mention active? This dog would be a great companion for a hiker or jogger. No couch potatoes, please! He loves attention from his human friends here at the shelter and he has a lovely disposition. He is very smart and obedient. He knows stay, sit, down, heels beautifully on lead, gives gentle kisses on command, and gives his paw like a true gentleman. He knows the hand signals for sit, stay and down. He is very much a working dog who loves his obedience sessions. This dog would be great at agility training. He is very eager to please and loves to learn new things. Dugan is a special needs dog as he requires a special diet readily available at Pet Supplies Plus or PetCo (Natural Balance, Potato & Duck formula) due to food allergies. Minnie
Minnie is our Dog of the Week. She arrived at the shelter on June 29, 2009. She is a ~3-5 year old Jack Russell Terrier. She is very high energy, friendly and sweet. She is looking for a forever family who can give her lots of time, attention and love! For more information on Minnie, please click on her link above.
April
April is our Cat of the Week. She has been our "Cat of the Week" for several months now; but we are determined to find her a new best friend! She is a domestic shorthair cat. She is a kind cat who is very loving and gentle. April was abandoned on the front steps of the shelter and is very lonely! This wonderful cat is waiting for a family of her own to love. She would be a great companion for a retired person - she is a true "lap" cat. She really enjoys sitting on a lap and being brushed. For more information on April, please click on her link above.
We also have several other cats now available for adoption! They are friendly, playful and beautiful! Please stop by during our viewing hours if you can provide a forever home for one of these terrific cats. Please check out our listings. Any one of them could be a wonderful addition to your family.
Who We Are
Dewitt Animal Hospital has been the shelter for the stray dogs from the City of Syracuse for over 10 years. If you are missing your pet or are looking for a new addition to the family, please call or stop in during our viewing hours as we do not post all animals at the shelter. All adoptable strays are put up for adoption after a holding period of 5 days. Each animal is provided veterinary care prior to adoption, including (but not limited to) Distemper/Parvo vaccinated, Bordetella (Kennel cough) vaccinated, Rabies vaccinated, Heartworm Tested and Microchipped (registration included). Young puppies are also dewormed. Adoptable cats are Feline Leukemia/FIV tested negative, current on Distemper and Rabies vaccinations, treated for ear mites, fleas and dewormed. Adoptable cats over 5 months of age are spayed/neutered as time permits.
Adopting a friend
We require all potential adopters to fill out our adoption application prior to viewing the animals (please bring photo id). Applications may take 24-48 hours for approval. We reserve the right to approve or deny an application based on hospital policy and the best interests of the adoptee. Upon approval of an application the adopter is required to purchase a NYS dog license through their town/city of residence. The total adoption fee paid to Dewitt Animal Hospital for a dog is ~$168.10; cat adoption is $120.51. The adoption fee for each pet includes a $40 spay/neuter cash deposit refundable when the animal is spayed/neutered.
Our goal is to find a loving, responsible, forever home for every adoptable cat or dog that enters the shelter.
