Who We Are
DeWitt Animal Hospital has been the shelter for the stray dogs from the City of Syracuse for over 10 years. If you are missing your pet or are looking for a new addition to the family, please call or stop in during our viewing hours as we do not post all animals at the shelter. All adoptable strays are put up for adoption after a holding period of 5 days. Each animal is provided veterinary care prior to adoption, including (but not limited to) Distemper/Parvo vaccinated, Bordetella (Kennel cough) vaccinated, Rabies vaccinated, Heartworm Tested and Microchipped (registration included). Young puppies are also dewormed. Adoptable cats are Feline Leukemia/FIV tested negative, current on Distemper and Rabies vaccinations, treated for ear mites, fleas and dewormed. Adoptable cats over 5 months of age are spayed/neutered as time permits.
Adopting a friend
We require all potential adopters to fill out our adoption application prior to viewing the animals (please bring photo id). Applications may take 24-48 hours for approval. We reserve the right to approve or deny an application based on hospital policy and the best interests of the adoptee. Upon approval of an application the adopter is required to purchase a NYS dog license through their town/city of residence.
We make every effort to evaluate the dogs and puppies so that we can make the appropriate recommendations for what type of home they require. If we indicate "No Small Children" it is most often because the animal is very boisterous and we feel they may harm a child in their efforts to play or get attention. Please call or e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns regarding the description a particular animal.
ADOPTION COSTS
The total Adoption Fee paid to DeWitt Animal Hospital for a dog or puppy is $171.16
Dog Adoption Fee: $102.00 + Tax = $110.16 + $21 Rabies Vaccination + $40 Spay/Neuter Deposit + ~$20 License Fee = $191.16
Cat Adoption Fee: $88.74 + Tax = $95.84 + $40 Spay/Neuter Deposit = $135.84
The Cat/Kitten Adoption Fee is $135.84.
The Adoption Fee for each pet includes a $40.00 spay/neuter cash deposit which is refunded when the animal is spayed or neutered.
Our goal is to find a loving, responsible, forever home for every adoptable cat or dog that enters the shelter. We often times work with legitimate rescue groups after we have exhausted all other resources available to us in placing an animal. Any rescue group wishing to work with us must complete an application and demonstrate to us that they are a legitimate group. All rescue groups must agree to keep us informed as to the location of the animals placed in their care and must be prepared to show us adoption and health records for all placed animals upon request.
