We are so very pleased to report that all of the horses we received in September,/October 2008 from cruelty cases in Arcadia and Sodus, NY have made what we can only call miraculous recoveries. Feona delivered her foal, Jax, in early May. Feona had a horrific uterine infection which her former owners left untreated and even after 3 ultrasounds, until the actual birth, we didn't know if Fee or her foal would survive. She was treated with antibiotics and prayers...and they worked! Foal Jax is a perfect little black and white Paint and he is growing by leaps and bounds. Feona is a perfect mother, and is very protective of her little one.
Our other miracle horse is Lizzy; when she came to our shelter she was tragically malnourished and dehydrated and her hooves were so rotted that you could actually put your fingers up through them. She could barely walk and stumbled when getting off the trailer after our rescue. Our veterinarians gave us little hope but our staff and volunteers never gave up. Lizzy has put on over 200 pounds and we have been given the "go" that she can be ridden again. She actually sailed over the 5 foot fence surrounding her pasture! Lizzy rocks!

Who We Are
Cracker Box Palace is a unique place in Wayne County where farm animals of every kind can come to recover from illness, neglect or abuse, to learn they still have friends and family after abandonment, or just to find new people when their families can no longer care for them. Their care and housing is funded totally through memberships, sponsorships, donations, and grants and most of our animals are available for adoption to appropriate homes. The Palace is a registered not for profit, no-kill haven; if animals cannot be placed in suitable adoptive homes they will be allowed to live out their lives in safety and peace, knowing that they will be cared for and loved.
Adopting a friend
Many of our animals are available for adoption. Interviews with prospective adoptive families are conducted and "new home" facilities are reviewed to make sure they will be right for your new friend. We offer a foster care program in which, after approval, you can take your new friend home for 3 months, get to know each other, and make sure the relationship is right for both of you. If not, the animal can be returned to the farm. Please contact the farm directly for specific adoption information at 315-483-2493.
Come Visit Us!
We're located in Alton, NY on the shore of Sodus Bay. Take Route 104 (from the east or west), turn north on Route 14 at the signal light in Alton. Follow the Route 14 north signs and take the first road to the right, Red Mill Road. At the top of the hill you'll find a complex of huge white barns and homes. The office is located just across the parking lot of the "Cow Barn" where you'll find a large outdoor rabbit run. Winter hours are Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. or by appointment.
