Our Featured Pet...

Our featured pet is Beasley a 20 yr old Blue and Gold Macaw. Beasley will need someone with Macaw experience. He was allowed to do what ever he wanted for 20 yrs, so he has no structure ,He will throw tantrums when he does not get his way. A HUGE THANK YOU TO PETCO, they donated brand new cages for our birds and lots of food.... We are holding a 50/50 raffle tickets are $1.00 or 6 for $5.00 this raffle will run for 2 months, so anyone interested in tickets, please contact us. .... congratulations Terry on wining the raffle , Terry made out with $350 !! We also have many fun fund raisers coming up so watch for them ! Announcement........... Spring is arriving and with that comes over active hormones in your birds, our pet birds have breeding seasons and spring is a big one for them, At this time their hormones change, and your sweet bird can get a bit nasty during this time, please remember during this time, Not to rub your bird down its back this will only increase its behavior ,and make it much more difficult for you.best thing to do when your bird is hormonally active, is to not handle them as much, this will reduce the risk of you getting bit, and reduce the risk of you accidentally over stimulating your bird. If you have a female bird and they start laying eggs, you will need to increase their calcium intake, We do not recommend cuttle bones, as their have been cases of slivers of the bone getting into birds crops, and causing damage, A good source of calcium is hard boiled eggs, once boiled crush the egg up shell and all, and fed to your birds, Be sure the eggs are cooled first. If your bird does lay eggs, and its a single female no male, just leave the eggs until she becomes bored of them, taking them away will only get her laying more eggs, then you run a risk of calcium issues, if you have a male and female and do not want babies, you can replace the eggs with fake eggs. Also please be sure to know the sign's of egg binding in your female birds,This can be deadly to them, If you notice your female acting different sitting on the bottom of the cage, puffed up and lethargic you need to get her seen by a avian vet right away , you may also notice if egg bond she may look as we say a little poochy in the belly. If they become egg bond this could kill them within 24 hrs,So please know your bird and if you notice them acting off, get them seen right away.

News

Second Chance Bird Rescue's news. We now have a wonderful 5000 sq foot shelter dedicated to just the birds! There are several rooms for all the different birds, where they are free from their cages daily to enjoy visiting each other and playing with the many toys and gyms they have. We also offer educational programs for the schools ,girl and boy scouts, nursing homes etc... These programs are for anyone !! We are here to try to help educate the public and children who are our next generation of pet owners, the proper care and handling of these wonderful birds. We have a great team of volunteers who are very experienced in proper bird care. They will be glad to help and answer any questions you may have ! Other news,We are building yet another bird room,We have gotten so many request for birds to come here from all over the states, that its time to add to the shelter !! We also offer a permanent sanctuary to birds,At many owners request they have chosen to have their birds live out their lives here. We also offer boarding and grooming. Also some other exciting news,We have had a Hawk Head Parrot donated to our shelter for our educational programs.stop up and meet Whyatte : ) We and see the many changes to the shelter. Who We Are

Second Chance Bird Rescue is a non for profit 501 (c) 3 exotic bird rescue. ALL donations are tax deductible ! We strive for proper bird care and teaching everyone interested in adopting the proper care, feeding etc.. We have been working with birds of all types for 15 years now. We take in unwanted birds, abused birds, found birds etc... And work very hard at getting them ready for their new forever homes. Every bird deserves a second chance ! No bird is unworkable. We have a great success rate working with birds with behavior problems. We have been able to place over 400 birds in new forever homes. All birds leave here happy, healthy and ready for their new family. NOTE- If you are looking to give up a bird to a rescue please check that rescue out. Many rescues claim to be non for profit and are not ! Ask lots of questions, check their paper work. Look over all the birds in the rescue. Make sure they look healthy, clean and have clean food and water. NEVER turn your birds over to a rescue without doing all this first. If you don't feel comfortable don't leave your birds there !! Other rescues also claim to be bird specialist! There is no such thing! A bird specialist is a vet and only a vet! We have also found out another rescue is buying proven pairs of breeding birds, off craigs list, and is now breeding for profit ! so another reason to use caution on where you send your birds. Please always check everything out. Your birds deserve the best possible care !
QUESTION:
Why is adopting better then buying from a pet store or breeder ?
ANSWER:
When you adopt you are giving a bird a second chance,These birds in rescue need a loving home, Many of the birds we get in are very sweet birds, no different then buying one. When you buy from the pet stores, you are only supporting breeding, There are so many unwanted birds already ,The shelters across the States are filling up, And these birds need you.
QUESTION:
Do you work with any pet stores ?
ANSWER:
Yes we work with Pet Saver in Greece, we are apart of their pet partners program, When you adopt from us, you will get a $10 off coupon, for your first purchase of supplies, you will also receive a card that everytime you make a purchase from Pet Saver you show them your card and 5 % of your total purchase will come back to our rescue, to help the birds. We do not work with any other pet store,I believe many of the stores that sell birds are only out for a profit, They don't give you proper care advice on the birds, This is why we get so many in, and hear over and over again, The store did not tell me about the care, they did not tell me proper feeding, and how much time I need to spend with this bird,They did not tell me birds go through hormone changes and can get a bit aggressive at this time, Or this bird was pushed on me from the store. So therefor we will only work with the store that helps rescues,There are some stores that like to trash talk rescues, these stores only want you to believe rescues are bad, If it wasn't for all of us in rescue there would be no place for the many unwanted birds to go,The stores say things only because they feel as if rescues are " cutting into their sales "

Adopting a friend

If you are interesting in adopting, please fill out a adoption application found at www.secondchancebirdrescue.com Please think long and hard before making a decision to bring a bird into your life. Make sure you are ready for the messes they cause,be ready for the noise, destruction, and hormone changes, that causes some aggression during breeding season. Be prepared at some point to be bitten! ALL BIRDS BITE!!All birds poop, so be ready for the mess !! Research the breed you are interested in. Make sure its the right fit for your home and family. Make sure you have time to give to such a wonderful creature. They need to be out of their cages several hours a day. They need lots of toys to chew and play with, and a good diet.
