ABOUT

The Yonkers Humane Society, Inc. was established to support the animals at the Yonkers Animal Shelter and animals in the community. We work with staff and administration to improve the life of shelter residents and we work to keep animals out of the shelter by coordinating with rescue networks. Some of our present and future projects include:

  • Contributing to the fund to build a new shelter, replacing the outmoded facility now in operation
  • Sponsoring community adoption days
  • Purchasing a mobile adoption van to provide low cost spay/neuter services to residents
  • Supporting the spay/neuter programs to reduce overpopulation and decrease the number of unwanted pets
  • Contributing funds for specialized care for abused and neglected animals
  • Providing educational programs to schools and community groups in order to reduce the incidence of animal abuse
  • Helping to promote senior and special needs dogs that are currently up for adoption at the Yonkers Animal Shelter

FEATURED PET: MEET DANNY!

Danny, is a brindle pit mix about 10months old, came to the shelter as a tiny puppy and was terrified and traumatized, we have no idea what happened to him while still a pup. A professional trainer took him home and has done a wonderful job with him, he is now in foster care and would love to have a home with a family who will devote time and love to caring for him. Contact Leslie at 201-981-3215.

SUCCESS STORIES

MEET PRINCESS!

This is a story written by one of the dedicated shelter volunteers, Erika, of how one person makes a difference in the life of a shelter dog...

PRINCESS SYLVIE 10/30/11

The little, about two year old blue nose, female pit probably arrived at the Yonkers Animal Shelter around May-June of 2011. She had been left behind when her folks moved out of the apartment. The volunteers called her Sylvie until one day a visitor to the shelter recognized her and said her original name was PRINCESS.

I immediately bonded with her at the shelter and took her out every day. I taught her to sit, lie down and give me her paw and she was willing to please. However, when I walked her she always seemed to want to go into a car or pull me to a certain destination. I assumed she was looking for her home. Once she got out of her cage and ran to the area where I usually walked her. The manager caught her and returned her to her cage.

I went on a two week vacation in August and when I returned she had developed diarrhea. When she had the diarrhea she also got a prolapsed rectum which in the beginning would go right back to normal. After a while, however, it would not so easily go back. She was taken to the vet and given some medication. It’s hard at the shelter for a sick dog to receive regular treatment.

One Sunday I was called by a worker and was told to come fast as her rectum would not go back in. I rushed over and called my vet and he said to bring her right in. He kept her for a few days and she was not getting better. In the meantime I was told she could not return to the shelter because they were not equipped to handle a sick dog. The vet agreed to keep her in the hope of getting her diarrhea under control. When she did not get back to normal I agreed to give her an ultrasound. She was diagnosed with chronic colitis.

The vet and I were not sure what our next step would be. Not sure if she would get better, who would take care of her, who would want to adopt her with her special needs. I was ready to have her put to sleep when I decided I would give the little girl a chance and hope for a miracle.

The vet agreed to board her at no charge and try different medications and food. Finally she started doing well with low residue food and a powder mixed in her food. Then she did not have any problems for two weeks and no more prolapsed rectum.

I felt she could possibly be adopted and someone would be willing to keep her on a special diet and medication. I kept in touch with a man who had originally shown an interest in :Princess and told him the truth about her and how she was doing and he was still interested. I took her out for walks every day the vet office was open. She was always looking for something, not enjoying her walks and sniffing but pulling me towards a car or a house. She was looking for a home. Princess Sylvie has been spayed and has put on some of the weight she had lost. She is now ready for adoption with a person or persons who are willing to keep her on the medication.

Update: Princess Sylvie, was adopted during the snowstorm on October 29, 2011 by a wonderful young man who came all the way from Brooklyn to take a look at her and took her home.

SAMMY'S ANGEL FUND

One of the Yonkers Humane Society's goals is to help find homes for special needs pets and provide grants for their medical care. Every pet--no matter how old or in need of medical attention--deserves a home to call their own.

Sadly, one of our former special needs recipients and cat room residents, Sammy, recently passed away. He was a favorite among Yonkers Humane Society volunteers, and was fortunate enough to spend his last few months with his new family. Since Sammy held a special place in everyone's heart, the Yonkers Humane Society is how renaming it's special needs fund as Sammy's Angel Fund. All proceeds donated to Sammy's Angel Fund will go directly to the care of special needs animals. Please consider making a donation.

Volunteer
You can always donate your time! Our Petsmart cat room relies on volunteers to clean the cat condos and socialize our furry friends, and morning and evening shifts are available 7 days a week. Our volunteer application can be downloaded here. You can fill it out and drop it off at the cat room at Petsmart. If no one is there, you can just slip it under the door, and someone will contact you promptly.

In addition to volunteering at the cat room, we are also desperately in need of volunteers in other areas, such as:

  • fundraising
  • helping us organize our database
  • helping out at special events
  • sorting/labeling/folding materials for mass mailings (such as our newsletter)
  • helping with online support (keeping myspace/facebook/catster up-to-date, taking pictures of all our cats at petsmart so that petfinder and related websites can stay updated, etc.)
If interested in helping in any of the above areas, please contact Rosemary at (914) 584-0374, or Leila at (914) 751-7870.

Donate Goods
We are always accepting donations for our cat room at Petsmart in Yonkers on Central Park Avenue (behind Best Buy). Some items on our wishlist include:

  • Wet food (the cats love anything fishy, like tuna or oceanfish)
  • Catnip toys
  • Cat beds
  • Litter
  • Scratching posts
  • Old towels and blankets
  • Large Kong toys
  • Cat treats and dog biscuits
  • Donations for tag sales
