News and Events

On August 1st, 2009 the Humane Society assumed the management of the Schuyler County Animal Shelter on Van Zandt Hollow Road. That was, indeed, an important milestone for the organization. Now we are in the process of consolidating all of our locations into one facility. We purchased property at 124 Marina Drive in Montour Falls and are working on getting it up and running this springr.

We have grown tremendously over the past several years and have achieved many of the goals we set forth.

And, now we have the opportunity to realize yet another major objective of the organization  -  to provide care and shelter for the stray and homeless dogs and cats of Schuyler County.

We are in the midst of building of a new shelter. This is going to be a BIG project and we will continue to need the support of our community. We have already opened the Kitty Kaboose at our new location at 124 Marina Drive, Montour Falls. ” Check out photos of the renovation.

Who We Are

Founded in 1987, The Humane Society of Schuyler County is an all volunteer 501c3 not for profit organization dedicated to improving the welfare of animals in Schuyler County. Our mission is to eliminate pet overpopulation, prevent cruelty to animals, provide quality care for homeless animals, promote responsible pet ownership, and help the community to develop humane principles toward all animals.

To address this mission we offer a low-cost spay/neuter service for the dogs and cats of eligible area residents and provide spay/neuter certificates for use at participating veterinarians. County residents meeting income requirements and residents with feral cat populations are provided the opportunity to bring dogs and cats to the low cost spay/neuter clinics offered twice monthly. We firmly believe that spay/neuter is the most effective means of reducing the problem of pet over population.

We are always looking for people to help. There are lots of ways to volunteer.

Adopting a Feline Friend

All cats adopted from the Humane Society of Schuyler County have been vaccinated for rabies and distemper, and have already been spayed or neutered. Cats have been tested for Felv/FIV, and have been seen and evaluated by a veterinarian. We make sure all of our adoptable pets are healthy. Our cat adoption fee is $75.00. You can meet some of our adoptable cats on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10 a.m. and noon and on Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Kitty Kaboose, 124 Marina Drive, Montour Falls, NY. We're also happy to schedule appointments outside of those hours. Please call us at 535-9960 or 594-2255. Many of our cats/kittens are in foster care so it's a good idea to call ahead to make sure you will be able to meet your feline companion when you arrive.

Adopting a Canine Friend

Prior to adoption, all of our dogs will be either spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies, distemper, parvo and kennel cough, treated for fleas and parasites, tested for heartworm and micro chipped.

While dogs are in our care they will be on a flea preventative and all dogs tested negative for heartworm will be put on a heartworm preventative . Other medical issues will be addressed on an individual basis. All dogs are micro-chipped prior to adoption. Adoption days/hours are Monday - Friday 8 - 10 am and Saturday 10 - 1 pm. We're also happy to schedule appointments outside of those hours. Please call us at 535-9960 or 594-2255. Several of our dogs are boarded or in foster care so it's a good idea to call ahead to make sure you will be able to meet your canine companion when you arrive.

In order to adopt, you must complete an application (available on our web site), which is reviewed by our adoption committee. We carefully screen all prospective families to make sure there is a good fit. The majority of our animals have been fostered in a home environment and evaluated before being available for adoption.

An adoption fee of $150 applies to cover the cost of vaccinations and spay/neuter, as well as the cost of any other vet care. It also includes 1 year of micro-chip membership.

If you are unable to adopt a companion animal, we welcome donations toward the cost of our adoption program. Sponsoring a homeless animal is a great way to make a difference in the life of a pet.
