A special way to protect your pet

The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is equipped with a universal scanner.  This device enables Shelter personnel to identify lost pets whose owners have had them implanted with a special microchip.

The microchip is encoded with data about the animal and is painlessly implanted by a private veterinarian or veterinarian technician.

If a microchip-protected pet becomes lost and is recovered by the Shelter, information about the animal and its owner's identity can be obtained by waving the scanner over the pet.

Please note that the Animal Shelter performs  implants of the microchip upon adoption of a shelter animal.

Lost pets brought to the

Animal Shelter

Dogs seized by the Animal Warden, or animals that have been running loose and are turned in by residents, are held at the Animal Shelter.  Owners of licensed dogs brought to the Shelter are notified by telephone and, if that fails, by certified mail.

Licensed dogs become available for adoption if they have not been claimed by their owners within twelve days.  Unlicensed dogs are offered for adoption after seven days at the Shelter.

The Town of Oyster Bay  Animal Shelter . . .

a state-of-the-art facility, built to house animals

in a healthy and nurturing environment.

l The "dog only" kennel areas have oversized cages, sheltered outdoor areas, and gabled roofs that let in diffused natural light.

l The entire Animal Shelter enjoys a complete air filtration system which provides air exchanges

every fifteen minutes of every day.

l All dogs have access to large outdoor runs to maintain healthy muscle tone.

l Quarantine cages segregate sick animals from the general population.  An in-house infirmary, not open to the public, provides treatment for ailing shelter residents.

l Cats brought to the shelter are housed in a soundproof area.  This stress-free environment consists of forty-two cages complete with skylight above.

l All dogs, where appropiate, receive "6 in 1" and rabies inoculations and all cats, where appropiate, are given "4 in 1" inoculations before

leaving the shelter.
