Who We Are

We are a municipal animal control facilty responsible for the enforcement of City and State Animal Control Codes and the care of stray animals in the City of Poughkeepsie. We offer Adoption, Humane Education, Foster Care and Low Cost Spay/Neuter referal.

The City of Poughkeepsie Animal Care and Control has an aggressive Adoption Program and advertises our animals for adoption in various forms of media.

Adopting a Friend

The City of Poughkeepsie Animal Care and Control has a brief adoption application that must be completed and approved prior to adoption. We require landlord and veterinarian references prior to application approval. All animals are fully immunized, dogs are tested for heartworm, cats are tested for feline leukemia and feline aids. The adoption fees are nominal, and the animal goes home spayed or neutered with all basic vet care completed.

Our adoption program is unique, as we do thorough, ongoing assessments of all of the dogs who pass through our kennels. We assess them initially for temperament, and reevaluate that assessment on a weekly basis, sometimes even more often, updating each biography accordingly. This evaluation is invaluable when it comes to successful home placement. We also give continuing phone advice, as well as written and video materials, as needed. All adopters are strongly advised to enroll with their new dog in basic obedience classes. They often make all the difference between a successful adoption and a tragically failed one. As important to us as adopting out our dogs is the accomplishment of making the right fit between the adoptor and the adoptee. It makes all the difference in their ongoing relationship, as well as the reputation of our program.
