EMERGENCY: 4/5/08:

EMERGENCY: Please Help Cosmo

Meet Cosmo a wonderful siberian boy of 10 years. His family has to surrender him due to issues and does not have much time to find him a new home. He is in great health and is looking for that special home that can give him love for the remainder of his years. He does well with other dogs and we would prefer someone with previous siberian experience. His placement is urgent, so please contact us immediately to set up a time to meet him at hskysavr@rochester.rr.com or 585-576-1724.

EMERGENCY 4/12/08: Pair of Sweet Siberians Need a New Home: This beautiful pair of Siberians are soon homeless. They are in desperate need of a new family. The female (red and white) is Mya and she is approximately 4 years old. The male who is black and white is approximately 2 years old and his name is Miko. They have been together for two years and have lived in a home with a family and several children. They are great dogs, fully vetted and ready to start a new life. Owners are moving and must find a place for them. Again, our time frame is short - we must find them a new home soon. Please contact us if you are interested in meeting them at 585-576-1724 or hskysavr@rochester.rr.com.

WE ARE DESPERATELY IN NEED OF FOSTER HOMES. Most of the pets that are in need are under the age of two - just puppies. If you are interested in fostering, please contact me at hskysavr@rochester.rr.com

News

For exciting news on Seneca Siberian Husky Club events, dog sledding, obedience shows and other fun activities, please visit the SSHC web site here to view the Club's web page.

For in-depth information on Siberian characteristics, temperaments, pros and cons of owning this wonderful breed, and other interesting information, please visit the Siberian Husky Club of America web site here.

As all of our rescue efforts are voluntary, we are always in need of donations. These can be items such as towels, crates, dog food, collars and leashes or anything else you may think of.

We are always looking for foster homes! There is a great need for people who would be willing to foster one of these lovely guys until we can find them a forever home. More foster homes mean more that can be saved. If you are interested in getting more information on fostering, please call or send and email to the contact information included at the bottom of this page.

Who We Are

We are a small group of volunteers dedicated to rescue and placement services of abused, neglected, abandoned or surrendered Siberian Huskies and Husky mixes. Our goals are not only to place these dogs in loving, forever homes, but to help educate people on the characteristics of this wonderful and intelligent breed.

As active members of the Seneca Siberian Husky club, we realized there was a need for rescue volunteers who could work with some of the local shelters and assist with the fostering and placement of Siberians in need. The club also receives numerous calls from individuals who are either looking to adopt a rescued Siberian or surrender a Siberian for personal reasons. We decided to provide this service as we are avid fans of the breed and have the facilities and experience to do so. The Club itself does not provide this service; it is however its members which hope to compliment the club in its endeavors for the common good of our beloved Siberian Huskies.

Requirements and General Information

These requirements are based on the characteristics of the breed.

We require all pets that are adopted through our rescue program go to homes with fenced yards. This can be chain link, stockade or invisible fencing. If you currently do not have a fenced yard and are not willing to invest in fencing for your new Siberian, please do not contact us. No Exceptions.

We receive many inquiries from people looking to adopt a Siberian that own small dogs and/or cats. Although many Sibs get along fine with small dogs and cats, we will not adopt to homes that have them ? please do not ask. We would also like to caution you if your home contains other small animals like birds, ferrets, rabbits, and so forth - it most likely will not work out!

Many huskies are ?escape artists? and many of the dogs we receive were picked up by local dog control officers for wandering the streets. Many owners are not prepared for the energy these dogs have and the exercise they require. Typical huskies are highly intelligent, easily bored, and apt to get into trouble if they don't receive proper obedience training and sufficient exercise.

In addition, many huskies although normally gentle and friendly with people and other dogs, have strong predatory instincts. If you are considering owning one of these wonderful dogs, you MUST be aware that small animals in and around the home, such as squirrels, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, and CATS, are potential victims of their predatory instinct. They are swift, cunning, and patient in their hunting skills.

Other Breeds

There may be times when we feature pictures of breeds other than Siberians. Although Sibs are our primary breed, we also try to help other dogs and rescue groups when there is a need if we have space. If the adoptions are through our rescue, we will maintain the same adoption procedures.

Adopting a friend

Most of the Siberians that you see on our website are currently in our foster care. All are temperament tested by a professional behavior consultant, fully vetted, and have been approved to go to forever homes. If you are interested in meeting one of these lovely dogs, please contact us by phone at 585-576-1724 or email us at hskysavr@rochester.rr.com

Adoptions through our rescue require an application process, home visit, and a veterinary reference if you have owned pets in the past. Due to the home visit, we ask that all applicants are within the Western NY area (Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo).

Fees

Our adoption fee for most of our dogs is $200.00. We do provide discounts based on age, special needs, or in situations where it is a multiple adoption. This covers the following: ?Pull fee? that we are charged from the local pounds to take the dog into rescue which averages $100.00, all vet bills for heart worm and parasite testing, heart worm preventative, obedience coupon for 10 percent off a basic class, and food ? all of our Siberians are on a Pro Plan diet.

Our work is strictly volunteer and all funds for this ?labor of love? come from the adoption fees and donations through the club. All of our dogs are fully vetted including annual shots, de-worming, heartworm testing, flea medications and spay/neuter. We also require that adopters sign up for one obedience class within 90days of adoption. We work with Animal Behavior Specialists for classes and will provide a discount coupon, if interested. Classes are held in Monroe County and outlining areas, so you should be able to find a location that is convenient.
