ANGIE'S STORY
Just wanted to share some news about Angie. Overall doing very well with training and getting acclimated, but still quite frisky. When she's calm she's a little doll. Two weeks ago we brought Angie to my mom's while we did errands, usually we go back apx. 4:30 to make dinner and check mom. That day was a very hot Monday and I decided to check mom earlier at 3:00. When we walked into mom's condo I saw my mom lying on the kitchen floor and as we got closer there was blood all over her face. She had Angie outside and stumbled over a concrete edging outside her condo. She managed to crawl inside on her knees but didn't have the strength to stand to reach the phone. It was very frightening and my mom was quite traumatized. The police, ambulance came and to be brief she broke nothing but had stitches in her face, abrasions, contusions, sore ribs, etc. Mom was probably on the floor for about an hour, if something hadn't told me to go earlier she would have been there for several hours. My mom explained that Angie stayed by her side, lying next to her the entire time and licked her face. Angie had some blood on the top of her head from kissing mom. Angie helped keep mom calm and let her feel that she was not alone. We have told everyone that Angie came from an Angel Adoption Center and she has truly earned her angel wings. My mom is 87 had hip replacement 2 years ago and it's a miracle she didn't break anything. As you can imagine my mom adores Angie and the two spend a lot of time cuddling. Angie seems to know that she needs to protect mom. Thanks again for giving us this little angel. Hope you're all well and finding homes for your angels. Please tell everyone you know about Angie.

Who We Are....

Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit New York corporation. We are dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of cocker spaniels and other dogs in need of loving forever homes. We will not reject any dog due to age or health and accept many dogs who have some temperament and/or medical issues. We require a $350 adoption donation to offset the costs associated with medical care, food and boarding for our dogs. Please note that this donation rarely if ever covers our costs in caring for an individual dog. Each of our dogs has been spayed or neutered, is up to date with vaccinations and has been vetted.

We rely solely on donations, whether through adoption or simple generosity from the public. Given our limited resources, we give priority to cocker spaniels and other dogs in local kill shelters who are in danger of being destroyed. We accept owner surrenders on a space available basis, and request a surrender fee reflecting whether the dog has been spayed or neutered, is up to date with vaccinations, and has any chronic health problems.

We believe that dogs are important members of their families and seek forever homes where our Abandoned Angels will be cherished for the rest of their lives. We carefully evaluate not just a prospective adopter's interaction with the dog, but also the dog's interaction with his or her prospective adopter. A home visit may be required. We prefer adopters who have experience with cockers and/or have previously owned a dog, but do adopt to first-time dog owners.

We regret that due to the uncertain backgrounds of many of our dogs, we rarely adopt an Abandoned Angel to a family with small children.

A dog is truly the best friend you will ever have. A dog's love is unconditional, his forgiveness boundless and his trust and belief in his people unmatched. It is truly humbling to walk in the company of such angels, particularly when that love, forgiveness and trust have been betrayed prior to coming to rescue.

Adopting a friend....

You are applying to adopt a rescued dog, who needs a forever home.

Adopting a rescue dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life. Rescued dogs are often the most loyal companions and very loving. But like any strong, healthy relationship, developing a strong relationship with your rescue dog requires work and commitment.

Some of these dogs have suffered abandonment, neglect and sometimes abuse. They require a patient, caring and committed home to help them adjust to their new environment. Some dogs may suffer from separation anxiety and bark or cry when left alone. This can last for several days or longer. We ask that you be willing to work with the dog for a minimum of 30 days.

In addition, some dogs may require help in housebreaking again. When a dog is brought to a new home, he will need time to adjust and get acclimated to his new surroundings and schedule. He/she may have accidents during this period.

During the transition period, we will be available during normal business hours to offer suggestions and assist you with any problems you may have with your new ?Abandoned Angel?. In the event of an emergency, please contact us immediately. If you do not reach us right away, we will return your call as soon as possible if you specify that it?s an emergency.

How You Can Help....

The best way you can help us is to provide a loving, permanent home for one of our Abandoned Angels. Please also make sure that each of your pets is spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering helps reduce pet overpopulation and reduces the risk of certain diseases, including certain types of cancer and pyometra in females.

We are also desperately in need of foster homes for our pups. Some of our dogs must be boarded due to the lack of foster homes, which is not ideal for the dog (despite the wonderful care provided by our vets and their staff) and costly for us.

If you cannot adopt or foster a dog, we also need:

$$$$ (for food, boarding and vet expenses)
collars and leashes
treats for the dogs
dog food (we prefer Life's Abundance)
dog beds, blankets and towels
dogwalkers, who are willing to socialize the dogs
help w/transport (to help with pulling dogs in more distant shelters and transporting area cockers to other rescues when we don't have the space)
