This is Rosie, she came to us so emaciated she needed to go to the emergency vet for lifesaving care! Rosie came in weighing 23 pounds and is now better than twice that. Rosie really is super sweet with people but cannot tolerate other pets! Please help us find a home for this special dog.

Effective January 1, 2011, changes regarding dog licensing here at the shelter. The County Dog Shelter will NOT be issuing any dog licenses. All dog licenses will be issued at your City or Town Clerks Office during their normal business hours.
Here are the changes for all dogs being REDEEMED (This means it is your own dog here at the shelter).
1. If you DO HAVE a LICENSE for your dog and it is current, all you need to do is pay the impoundment fee.
2. If you DO NOT have a LICENSE, but DO HAVE a CURRENT RABIES VACCINATION, you will need to go to your City or Town Clerk and purchase a dog license, bring that licnese with you back to the shelter and pay the impound fee.
3. If you DO NOT have a LICENSE nor a CURRENT RABIES SHOT for your dog, you will need to do the following:
* Identify that it is in fact your dog.
* Pay the shelter for the cost of the rabies shot. The shelter will then take your dog to the vets and return with the dog after the vaccine is given. You can either wait for them to return with your rabies vaccination certificate or we can fax a copy of the certificate to your City or Town Clerk.
* Then you will need to go to your City or Town Clerk to purchase your dog license and bring it back with you to the shelter and pay the impoundment fee.
* Then you may get your dog.
The County Dog Shelter has NO CONTROL on these changes. This is due to New York State no longer controlling the dog licensing and the Towns and Cities will no longer allow this County Dog Shelter to issue and dog licenses.
Thank you for your understanding on this matter.
Following are the Town and City Clerks hours of operation and telephone numbers for Jefferson County. Please call your Town or City Clerk with dog licensing questions.

IF YOU LOVE ME...LICENSE ME! Please...Don't forget! New York State requires ALL dogs of age 4 MONTHS OLD AND OLDER to be licensed. If your dog is under 4 months old but leaves your property, it also must be licensed. License early and renew on time to avoid inconveniences! Also keep the license tag on your dog, NOT in his records folder! If your dog becomes lost(it can happen to anyone) this tag is the best way to a quick recovery! Dog licenses are issued through your City or Town municipal clerk's office.
ALSO...Look for our Newsletter printed, on the 15th of February,May,August, and November. These can be found at our shelter, various businesses, and veterinarian offices in Jefferson County. Call for exact locations.
