We are a non-profit organization that is involved in the rescue and placement of abandoned animals. The sad facts are that there are just not enough loving and available homes for the millions of abandoned animals in the world today. Through our many foster homes we are able to rescue abandoned animals from shelters, get them the medical help they need and then place them in permanent, loving families.
Many times the animals we rescue need medical intervention before they can be placed. Some need minimal medical attention such as vaccinations, de-worming and antibiotics while others are in desperate need of costly surgical procedures to alleviate their pain and discomfort. All animals must be spayed or neutered before placment. Our volunteers love welcoming new fosters into their homes and their hearts but more often than not it is a huge financial burden, even with the discounts the local vets extend to us.
Your support gives us the opportunity to extend families and save lives and that is C.A.R.E 's ultimate mission.
Adopting an animal from C.A.R.E requires an initial phone interview, a home visit and a vet reference from your current or past veterinarian. If you've never had a dog before, don't panic, you will still be considered in the adoption process and we will be more than happy to recomend a wonderful vet for you in your area if you need one. Now for the question that is on every potential adopters mind, "Is there an adoption fee?" To this question I answer the following:
Some people feel that by asking or requiring an adoption donation, a rescue group is "selling" a dog. Rescuers are often asked if they "make their living" doing rescue. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Individuals and non-profit private rescue groups do animal rescue as a labor of love. Even factoring in the offset of donations, rescue volunteers spend hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets on food, medicine, vet bills, phone bills, advertising costs etc. They also put in countless hours of their personal time screening calls, doing paperwork, caring for and transporting foster animals and educating the public. This may come at the expense of the rescuer's family and work obligations.
At a minimum, every rescue dog or cat must be altered and vaccinated prior to adoption. Other pre-adoption costs frequently include heartworm and stool testing, de-worming and flea treatment, antibiotics for kennel cough or other infections, professional grooming for long haired dogs, biopsies,x-rays and other treatment for illnesses and injuries, and vitamins and costly premium food for malnourished animals. Rescue animals may be in a boarding facilty or volunteer foster home for weeks or months before they are ready for adoption and/or find a suitable home. Rescue groups also purchase crates, collars, leashes, bowls, toys, treats, beds and other necessary supplies for foster animals. Expenses for just one animal can reach hundreds of dollars. In the rare cases that a donation exceeds the cost for an individual pet, the extra money goes towards another needy animal. Many kind veterinarians, groomers, pet supply stores and boarding kennels offer discounts to rescue organizations, but they do not and cannot offer their services for free.
So to further clear up any doubt, yes we will expect a donation at the time of adoption. These donations will help us to recover financially from the funds that were depleted in the care and rescue of the animal you are about to adopt. This in turn affords us the opportunity to rescue and care for the next abandoned animal. With your help we can save as many lives as possible.
I hope the above has answered that question for you......
Donations may be waived for those very special people who are willing to open their homes and hearts to a senior, handicapped, or special needs pet. (Senior dogs are those over 7 years of age, special needs pets may have chronic medical conditions or need behavioral training.)
