This is the story of these Chow Chows.
On May 23rd, 2009 I traveled along with a friend to the Humane League of Lancaster County (HLLC) to groom and assist with the Chow Chows that were seized from a hoarder. We arrived at 7:30 in the morning and were greeted by the friendly staff at the Humane League. What happened next is beyond words… We walked through the kennels to see the Chows that were in need. Rows and rows of kennels with neon pink signs that read 1 of 90. You see there were 92 but that included the two that were found dead at the residence. While accessing the situation as to which dogs we would groom first I needed to pause and catch my breath. You see I have never seen Chows in such bad shape. The thick coats of many of the Chow Chows were severely matted and caked in urine and feces. A number of them would need to be sedated to be groomed. We decided to get the Chows that were up for adoption groomed first. Keeter was first in the tub. He was a black Chow that we thought was blowing coat but he wasn’t. He was covered in feces on his legs, half his belly and all over his rear-end. You see he had been living in a crate in his own feces for god knows how long. The water was golden brown as we bathed him two times. He was so patient for his groom. He was adopted later that week. Then we groomed a cream female Chow Chow named Tina. I wasn't sure we were going to be able to groom her without shaving her because of the matting on her hind end but my friend said lets give it a try and I'm glad we did. We worked on the coat and underneath all that matting was a beautiful Chow Chow. She was adopted later that day. We then groomed a severely matted Chow named Jerry. He seemed so depressed. We did have to shave Jerry really short due to his skin condition. He had opened wounds that needed to be cleaned. When he was finished we took him outside and boy did he ever come alive. He wasn’t the same Jerry we saw a few hours ago. He was free from all of those mats and boy did he feel good. He is heartworm positive but is now doing well in another rescue. The rest of the day was the same, trying to get all the filth off the Chows. We went back to the hotel that night and couldn’t believe what we saw. We went back two more weekends to groom the rest of the Chows, falling in love with each and every one of them.
I have to tell you about one Chow that has my heart. His name is Keefer. When I first saw him in his kennel he wouldn’t get up. He was severely matted and in pain. They sedated him and Shaved him. The next day we gave him a bath. His skin was so inflamed that when we bathed him he cried the entire time. He broke my heart and I began to cry. From that moment I knew he had to come home with me. So a call to the boyfriend, a yes and Keefer was in my van. He is right next to me as I type this. He is up for adoption and I would love to find him his forever home.
Out of the 92 Chows, 2 were found dead at the residence, 4 had to be euthanized because of poor health and/or injury, 16 went back to breeders that sold her dogs or other owners of those Chows, 30 went back to shelters that she pulled Chows from, 11 have been adopted from HLLC and 29 were left and needed our help.

Who We Are
Chow Rescue is a Volunteer Rescue Group I started in January 2001 that is dedicated to finding good homes for purebred Chow Chows. I started this rescue out of my love for this breed. I do this out of my home and am not a shelter. I never place a dog with a bite history or one that shows any kind of aggression. We get calls every day for Chows in need of help. Unfortunately I can not save them all but do my best to save as many as I can. The look on their face when one gets adopted is as good as gold to me. This is who Chow Chow Rescue is and why I do this.
Adopting a friend
If you are interested in adopting a Chow Chow or have any questions please e-mail or call me. You will need to fill out an adoption application before meeting one of our Chow Chows. We ask $200.00 to adopt one of our Chow Chows. This helps defray the cost of running the rescue. All dogs come up-to-date on shots, heartworm tested and are spayed or neutered. We try to have all dogs groomed and micro-chipped but sometimes don't have the funds to do so.
Volunteer to help a friend
I don't have enough room in my house to take in all the Chow Chows that need homes. This is where you can help. Do you think you could foster a dog until we find it a home? Or help every other weekend setting up a table for pet adoption days at different pet stores in the Syracuse area? Or even just coming over and groom one of our wonderful rescues? Any help would mean a great deal to our Chow Chows. If you can help in anyway please contact me.
