UPDATES

PLUTO's "VAN-TASTIC" update
We are extremely happy to report that PLUTO has received its new animal transport van!

Due to the generosity of our members, benefactors and friends, we raised over $10,000 through our recent van appeal. Since the necessity was so great, we used the $10,000 as a down payment and will be financing the remainder over five years. Our original van had been donated to us over three years ago with over 130,000 miles on it. Although it was old and beaten up, it did serve us well and we were very grateful to have it. What a wonderful feeling of relief it is to have dependable transportation and not have to worry about the safety and well being of the animals we transport. We are forever grateful for the overwhelming support and encouragement you all have provided to PLUTO on behalf of the animals in need. Through your generosity and kindness, we have the privilege of enriching their lives, their health, their psyches and their souls.

If you would like to donate to this special cause, please mail us your donation and send to:

Help Make New York City More Pet Friendly
Support Intro. 13

Are you lucky enough to share your home with a companion animal - or do you just wish you could? Would you like to help more animal lovers in New York City have a pet, and directly reduce the euthanasia of adoptable companion animals in our shelters? If so, the ASPCA need your help to pass Intro. No. 13, the Pets in Housing bill.

Intro. No 13, the Pets in Housing bill, states that once a landlord waives a renter's no pet clause*, the renter can replace a deceased or relocated pet with another pet or the same species. In other words, the no-pet clause was waived and the pet dies or was relocated, you can automatically replace the previous pet with a new pet of the same species, eliminating the need to choose between your apartment and your pet.

*(When the pet owner has openly kept the pet for at least 3 months and the landlord does not take legal action to enforce any no pet clause in the lease)

You can help by contacting New York City Councilmember James S Oddo by phone (718) 980-1017 or US mail urging him to support and cosponsor Intro. 13. The ASPCA has a sample letter you can easily download, print and mail on their website (www.aspca.org/intro13).

Councilmember James S Oddo
94 Lincoln Avenue
Staten Island, NY 10306

Urge him to support and co-sponsor Intro. 13!

For more information please contact the ASPCA at (212) 876-7700 x 4550.

PET HEALTH AND LOW COST SPAY/NEUTERING

A Neutered Pet is a Healthier & Happier Pet

Ever wonder why they call it fixed, it's not because it's broken it's because you can prevent a lot of broken hearts by not breeding your wonderful pet. Everyone thinks that their pet would make beautiful puppies/kittens there are already many beautiful puppies/kittens that need homes. If you could see first hand the amount of dogs/cats that are put to sleep just because there is not enough homes for all of them. By mating your dog/cat you can create 4 to 10 new lives that TAKE the lives of 4 to 10 wonderful pets in the shelter. Please consider spaying/neutering your pets and you could be saving the lives of other pets!

The concept of early spaying and neutering (before the animal is sexually mature (is not a new one. The philosophy of early spaying and neutering of pets has been practice for over 50 years in North America It was not until much later that questions and concerns were raised about the possibility for negative side effects in practicing this procedure.

Concerns that were raised, while determining at what age an animal should be spayed or neutered, were that the animal may suffer from long term effects such as; stunted growth, a higher tendency to obesity, a lack of desire to be active or an undesirable behavior pattern. It was believed waiting until a patient was older increased the safety of surgery, as well concerns that early altering could increase the incidence of feline lower urinary tract disease, have been voiced.

These concerns have been tested and researched thoroughly by many different universities and have resulted in some findings that are worth studying and understanding before making and conclusions on when to spay or neuter your pet. These extensive studies were monitored very seriously and concluded that the spaying or neutering of an animal, before it has reached sexual maturity, has no known ill side effects. On the contrary, research has founded that early spaying or neutering of your pet can aid in the recovery process, giving your pet a speedy and virtually painless recovery. Years ago, when available, waiting until a patient was older increased the safety of surgery. Altering no longer needs to be delayed for this reason. These studies were conducted on animal aging from 7 weeks old to 12 months old. Those 7 weeks old did not react any differently than those who were 12 months old.

Why Advocate Early Spay & Neuter?

There are obvious reasons to spay or neuter your pet as soon as possible. There reasons are r the general animal population or for the general animal population or for your pets health in general. Population control is a growing concern and by spaying or neutering your pet, you can help contribute to reducing this problem. Responsible pet owners can and should make a collective effort in insure that all pets are neutered preventing any further increases in unwanted pets. Susan Dixon, DVM fully endorses early altering and has done hundreds of baby kittens. "the surgery is EASY and the kittens heal so fast".

A health Pet is a happy pet and the earlier they are spayed or neutered the less likely they are to remember the procedure ant he more likely they are to have a speedy recovery.
