Animal Haven
Animal Haven News
Our mobile adoption van has been very busy. This van not only helps place animals with new families, but also provides incredible opportunities to educate the public on the plight of homeless pets and spay/neuter issues. Adoptions and education remain the focus of out "Pets and the People" program.
Working with other humane organizations is the only way we will make a significant impact in our community. Animal Haven has partnered with Neighborhood Cats and the ASPCA to care for multiple feral cat colonies. We have created strong relationships with many organizations and will continue to work towards achieving our mutual goals.
Our commitment to our special needs animals can be seen in how well they are cared for. We continue to take in animals with treatable medical conditions that might have otherwise led to their euthanization. This put a significant strain on our limited budget but we feel it is worth it. Sometimes it is as simple as providing a warm place to sleep, good food, and medication while they recover and other times it means hundreds of dollars in medical costs to remedy a serious injury.
It is with public support that Animal Haven has survived 40 years. And it is with continued generosity that we will grow and flourish for many years to come. We are working towards the day when no adoptable animal is killed just because it doesn't have a home.
Please check out our website (http://www.animalhavenshelter.org) for lots of important Animal Haven information and activities.
Who We Are
Animal Haven is a non profit, no kill shelter. It has been run by a small group of dedicated volunteers for the past 30 years and is supported by donations from animal lovers like yourself. Our mission is to carefully place cats and dogs into loving homes, as well as give lifetime care to those who can't be placed. We have many dogs, cats, puppies and kittens who would make wonderful additions to your family.
Adopting a friend
To initiate the adoption process call our shelter at (718) 886-3683 to arrange a visit and see the animals. We are open daily from 11am to 4pm with late hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays hours 12pm to 7pm. When you come to the shelter you will be helped to pick the animal best suited to your needs and those of the animal. You will need to fill out an adoption form including vet information so the manager can do a vet check. Presuming everything is satisfactory, the shelter manager or director will bring the animal to your home. They will check to make sure everything is safe and address any last minute questions or concerns. All animals are spayed/neutered and current on their innoculations. The adoption fee is $100 for dogs, $100 for two cats, and $75 for one cat. Animal Haven only does tri-state adoptions due to the vet and house checking policies.
Volunteering and Donations
We love our volunteers and the animals always appreciate some TLC and exercise. We need people to walk the dogs, pet our cats, help groom, and just play, especially during the week when the shelter is at its quietest. We also do off site adoptions and various fund raisers(luncheons, auctions, bowl-a-thons, flea markets, etc.) and would love your help. The shelter is open 7 days a week. We ask new volunteers to come to the shelter any day from 11am to 2pm for an initial visit to fill out the volunteer information form. An orientation will be arranged and then you can begin. Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
Animal Haven is supported by donations from animal lovers such as yourself. We are currently trying to raise money for a new shelter facility to enhance the quality of life for our animals and also enable us to help even more of the homeless animals who need us. We've outgrown the small two story house we've been in for the past 20 years. Our cats and dogs need more room to grow and play in. For information on shelter membership, becomming a pet sponsor, or participating in our shopping programs visit Animal Haven's website at AnimalHavenShelter.org.
