Adoption Policy

Adoption Requirements & Process

TO APPLY TO ADOPT OR TO FOSTER OUR DOGS GO TO OUTOFTHEPITS.ORG AND COMPLETE THE ONLINE ADOPTION APPLICATION.

Please do not leave anything out. We will not respond to incomplete applications.

All applicants must be at least 21 years of age (we do not make exceptions)

Any children in the home MUST be at least 5 years of age (we do not make exceptions)

Any current animals in the home must be spayed or neutered

We adopt to locations within a 4 hour radius from the Albany NY area (excluding Canada).

We DO NOT ship dogs. It is important to us that you meet a dog prior to adoption.

Opposite sex placements only. Exceptions are made only for homes where the current same sex dog is a senior, or both the dog in the home and the dog to be adopted are adults (over 2 years old) known to be dog social with dogs of the same sex.

Everyone in the home must be in agreement about adding a new dog to the household.

You must own your home to adopt a puppy. If you rent we will ONLY consider an adult placement (over the age of 2).

If you rent please verify that your landlord will allow pit bulls (we will check). Applicants must have a 1 year rental history at current location. We Do Not adopt to apartment complexes.

If you own, verify that your home owner’s insurance covers the Pit bull breed (if not, we would be happy to give you the name of companies that do not breed discriminate)

Please verify that your community does not have any breed specific legislation

Once your application is received we will email you to arrange a time to speak with you on the phone. We can then talk more about your application, our process, the dogs we currently have available and what might fit best into your home.

We call your references and call your vet to verify all current animals are altered and vaccinated. Please call your vet office and ask them to note your file that it is OK to speak with us about your pets.

Once we have spoken with you and verified your references we will then schedule your home visit. We are not looking for beauty, just a safe environment for a dog.

If approved to adopt you will be required to sign our legally binding adoption contract.

Our adoption fee (due at time of adoption) is $300 for puppies under 6 months of age / For dogs over 6 months of age the fee varies. Please see the individual pet listing for the adoption fee of the dog you are interested in adopting.

* We also have special adoption prices for Seniors adopting Seniors (over 7 years old) and discounts for veterans adopting adult dogs (over the age of 2 years old).
