It was nice to see our feline companions make the press this week. In the Lighthouse Log, Dr. Jones (Health Matters) suggests that sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder “get a cat”. He says that cat owners have 60% fewer headaches, are 21% less likely to get colds or the flu and have fewer problems with insomnia, impatience, and tension. Ah, the joys of holding a purring cat!
In the Herald I read that a woman in Oregon had started a thriving business featuring cat agility. Owners love to try the agility course with their pet,and people are anxious to pay to watch. Why not? I have studied my brood , and decided that Abby Cat would be the best candidate. She is play motivated and not intimidated by strange surroundings or new people.
Dogs are wonderful companion animals. They are intelligent creatures who love us, follow us around and accept us as their leader. Cats are also wonderful: just different is some ways. Cats are looking for friends, not “top dogs”, but they are equally loving and smart. They can be such different individuals.
My Gracie is sweet, shy and loving. Cho is not very impressed with , but adores my dogs. Izzy is a gentle lady accepting all animals, including me, with grace. Old Joe is extremely intelligent and knows it. He has softened with age and can win me over easily when he gently taps my face with his soft paw – claws safely sheathed.
If you think you don’t like cats, you just haven’t known he right one. Cats fit well into busy lifestyles, and there are untold numbers in dire need of homes. Please think it over. Then visit S.H.A.I.D. or your local Humane Society to find a feline friend. Both you and the cat will benefit.
S.H.A.I.D. is open to the public Tuesday to Friday from noon until 3 pm. On Saturdays we are open from 11 am to 4 pm. S.H.A.I.D. is closed on Sunday and Monday. Those days are often covered by volunteers, so we request that the public respect the CLOSED sign. If necessary, special appointments can be arranged by calling the shelter at 543-4849.
Donations are always welcome (and needed). Currently our supply of chlorine bleach is low.
Tune into CKBW every Tuesday at 1:10 PM to hear the inside scoop on one of our featured pets. A staff member will be "telling all" about one lucky animal; each week. Check out www.ckbw.com to see who is being talked about each week.
"We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." - Immanuel Kant
We know we are blessed with many friends of S.H.A.I.D. whose hearts are open to the plight of our homeless animals. Whether you show your support by adopting, volunteering or donating, please know that you are appreciated. This Valentine's season, we are asking you to consider making a financial contribution towards their care.
For detailed information about how you can donate/participate, see our main website www.shaid.ca
Is the pitter-patter of your pet's feet louder than usual? The problem could be his nails. The winter months keep many dogs indoors, reducing the opportunity to wear down nails on pavement and hard ground. Even when a pet has adequate exercise on hard surfaces, nails may grow uncomfortably long. Age, body type and structure, and the shape and position of the foot all play a part in the pattern of nail wear.
Come and join us on the last Saturday of the month (for the next 3 months)for Pawdicures for your pets. This is a trial period if we get good feed back, it will be a monthly event! Dogs of all sizes and Cats welcomed!
We are doing this to show our support to our local shelters. No appointments will be needed. We will be donating a percentage of the money we make to either the Lunenberg County SPCA or SHAID Tree. It will be your choice where the money will go.

S.H.A.I.D. is full to the brim with wonderful, loving cats and many great dogs are also available.
We need your help. We need volunteers to run errands, to handle minor repairs, to do yardwork and shovel walkways. We need people to groom and train dogs (you do not have to be an experienced trainer). We need people to foster the sick and the young. When volunteers can give a morning to clean cat cages, the staff can get their other work caught up. Because of the need to control disease, you cannot go from cat to cat to socialize but you can drop in and groom one cat - clipping his claws, combing him and cleaning his ears. We need people to help with computer work (newsletter) and accounting. Also we would like to have a retired teacher available who is well aware of animal issues to offer humane education to schools.
If you would like to help in any of the above mentioned ways or in any other way you can think of, please contact the shelter. We will be happy to hear from you!
It's even easier now to donate to S.H.A.I.D. using your credit card securely online thanks to a partnership with Canada Helps, a non-profit group dedicated to assisting Canadian non-profits to raise funds. Just click on the button below.

You will receive a tax receipt (sent to your e-mail) which you can print out and send in to CCRA (Revenue Canada) with your income tax. Simple and almost painless! Try it. We hope that many of you will consider this convenient method to send your favourite charity (that would be us!) donations.
As you may know, each year we obtain some of our raffle prizes from our accumulated Club Z points from Zellers. This has meant that 100% of the proceeds from the raffle went directly to the animals. To donate your points to S.H.A.I.D., you will need to complete a "Supporting Member Donation Form" available from S.H.A.I.D. or from Zellers Customer Service and drop it off to them. S.H.A.I.D.'s Public ID Number which you will need to put on the form is 1005580 and the Community Organization Name should read "S.H.A.I.D. Tree Shelter Society" . You can donate all or a percentage of your points by indicating same on the form. Then , once this is processed, you just use your own HBC Rewards card and no longer need the Keytag. One less thing to carry around!!!!!

Our complete adoption policies can be read on our sister site. For our complete adoption policies, click here.
Our doors are open to all homeless and abandoned animals. Owned animals are admitted only if there is room.
We now have an adoption application form that you fill out prior to adoption and you must be approved before you can adopt one of our animals.
Adoption applications are NOT available on-line. Please e-mail or call to have one sent to you.
Please note: we do NOT do long distance adoptions over the Internet. We feel the best possible match requires the prospective owner meeting with the animal at the shelter. It is sometimes even necessary to visit more than once to allow the animal to become comfortable with you before taking him or her home. So if you see one of our critters on this site and fall in love, please make arrangements to come and meet them.
To become a S.H.A.I.D. member or to renew your membership, click here.
Membership is only $10 annually and it adds your voice to those who speak up for the needs of animals who cannot speak for themselves and this includes the cost of sending you our newsletter so you will know about everything that is happening here at S.H.A.I.D.!
If you prefer, call or e-mail the shelter and they will gladly send you a membership form which you can fill out and return with your $10 at your convenience. Tell them you saw it on this site!
LIFETIME MEMBERSHIPS are also available. To calculate your LM fee, subtract your age from 65 and multiply by 10 e.g. if you are 45 you subtract that from 65 ( which equals 20) times 10 and your LM fee is $200. If you are over age 65, it is a flat $100 fee. No more need to remember to send in your membership. You will get a lovely certificate suitable for framing.
There are many ways to get even more involved with helping our critters from cleaning out cat cages to walking and grooming the dogs or cats to just visiting them - they love to see people and love the attention. You can volunteer to help with fundraisers or drop off supplies needed constantly by the shelter. We welcome and invite you to help at whatever level suits you best and we thank you sincerely for your concern.
