We named one of our new dogs Newbie. It was supposed to be a temporary title but it stuck. This is a sweet little dog who absolutely loves people. He is a true mixed breed - so much so that it is difficult to label him. Tye is another new addition. He is a very pleasant, medium sized male, about 40 to 45 pounds. Tye has some border collie or sheltie inhim. He has that collie look.
Volunteers from the shelter take animals to visit the folks at Hillside Pines. On our last visit we took four kittens who turned out to be perfect for the job. They loved to be cuddled and sat quietly with one person after another. For anyone looking for an affectionate pet, these little ones are for you. Two were little short haired grey and white kittens, about 12 weeks old. the other two were the little ones found in a box outside the gate. One is blue cream and the other babay is a cream tabby. They were about 8 weeks old at the time of our visit and did beautifully in a strange place with well over a dozen people. One stretched out and had a nap on the arm of a friend's wheelchair! All four of these kittens can be found in adoption ward B.
There are so many cats and kittens seeking homes that perhaps you would consider taking two. Siblings or mother and kitten make great combinations. Anybody who has such a combination will vouch for it.
Slim is new at SHAID. He is a beautiful black tomcat who is only 4 years old. Unfortunately Slim is not only overweight (he weighs 26 pounds) but he is also blind. He is now housed in the upstairs education room. We hope that the opportunity for exercise, plus diet food will help him regain his figure.
Blind cats can manage very well. Cats are far more dependent on their sense of smell than they are on either their eyes or their ears. They perceive the world in a very different way than we do.
Animals are also very accepting. They do not go through life bemoaning what they may be missing. They simply enjoy what they have. We can learn a great deal from our companion animals.
Truman is a 10 to 12 week old short-haired white kitten. He is from a colony where many animals are feral but he is very friendly indeed. He is one of those kittens that loves to be lugged around by a human companion.
An interesting canine has arrived. I would call this little fellow a Jack Russell terrier, although he did not arrive with a pedigree between his teeth. Rusty is about 4-5 years and seems like a very nice fellow. Our two older beagles are still waiting to be appreciated. They probably came from the same pack and truly enjoy each other's company.
Rusty is a handsome and friendly fellow

S.H.A.I.D. is full to the brim with wonderful, loving cats and many great dogs are also available.
We need your help. We need volunteers to run errands, to handle minor repairs, to do yardwork and shovel walkways. We need people to groom and train dogs (you do not have to be an experienced trainer). We need people to foster the sick and the young. When volunteers can give a morning to clean cat cages, the staff can get their other work caught up. Because of the need to control disease, you cannot go from cat to cat to socialize but you can drop in and groom one cat - clipping his claws, combing him and cleaning his ears. We need people to help with computer work (newsletter) and accounting. Also we would like to have a retired teacher available who is well aware of animal issues to offer humane education to schools.
If you would like to help in any of the above mentioned ways or in any other way you can think of, please contact the shelter. We will be happy to hear from you!
It's even easier now to donate to S.H.A.I.D. using your credit card securely online thanks to a partnership with Canada Helps, a non-profit group dedicated to assisting Canadian non-profits to raise funds. Just click on the button below.

You will receive a tax receipt (sent to your e-mail) which you can print out and send in to CCRA (Revenue Canada) with your income tax. Simple and almost painless! Try it. We hope that many of you will consider this convenient method to send your favourite charity (that would be us!) donations.
As you may know, each year we obtain some of our raffle prizes from our accumulated Club Z points from Zellers. This has meant that 100% of the proceeds from the raffle went directly to the animals. To donate your points to S.H.A.I.D., you will need to complete a "Supporting Member Donation Form" available from S.H.A.I.D. or from Zellers Customer Service and drop it off to them. S.H.A.I.D.'s Public ID Number which you will need to put on the form is 1005580 and the Community Organization Name should read "S.H.A.I.D. Tree Shelter Society" . You can donate all or a percentage of your points by indicating same on the form. Then , once this is processed, you just use your own HBC Rewards card and no longer need the Keytag. One less thing to carry around!!!!!

Our complete adoption policies can be read on our sister site. For our complete adoption policies, click here.
Our doors are open to all homeless and abandoned animals. Owned animals are admitted only if there is room.
We now have an adoption application form that you fill out prior to adoption and you must be approved before you can adopt one of our animals.
Adoption applications are NOT available on-line. Please e-mail or call to have one sent to you.
Please note: we do NOT do long distance adoptions over the Internet. We feel the best possible match requires the prospective owner meeting with the animal at the shelter. It is sometimes even necessary to visit more than once to allow the animal to become comfortable with you before taking him or her home. So if you see one of our critters on this site and fall in love, please make arrangements to come and meet them.
To become a S.H.A.I.D. member or to renew your membership, click here.
Membership is only $10 annually and it adds your voice to those who speak up for the needs of animals who cannot speak for themselves and this includes the cost of sending you our newsletter so you will know about everything that is happening here at S.H.A.I.D.!
If you prefer, call or e-mail the shelter and they will gladly send you a membership form which you can fill out and return with your $10 at your convenience. Tell them you saw it on this site!
LIFETIME MEMBERSHIPS are also available. To calculate your LM fee, subtract your age from 65 and multiply by 10 e.g. if you are 45 you subtract that from 65 ( which equals 20) times 10 and your LM fee is $200. If you are over age 65, it is a flat $100 fee. No more need to remember to send in your membership. You will get a lovely certificate suitable for framing.
There are many ways to get even more involved with helping our critters from cleaning out cat cages to walking and grooming the dogs or cats to just visiting them - they love to see people and love the attention. You can volunteer to help with fundraisers or drop off supplies needed constantly by the shelter. We welcome and invite you to help at whatever level suits you best and we thank you sincerely for your concern.
