Clovis Animal Welfare League
Who We Are
Clovis Animal Welfare League has been the voice of animal welfare in Clovis for more than a decade. CAWL helps people get their companion animals sterilized, provides as many dog houses as possible for dogs that are unfortunate enough to belong to people that refuse to let their companion animals in the house. CAWL also provides cat play cages to cats in animals control, along with dog beds and blankets for the dogs in animal control. The list goes on. CAWL can always use donations of this sort to help with companion animals that, through no fault of their own, find themselves in unfortunate circumstances.
Adopting a friend
Unfortunately Clovis Animal Welfare League will no longer be doing adoptions or taking in foster dogs for the time being. The Rescue Coordinator has resigned for family issues. Until a new Rescue Coordinator volunteers to take over those responsibilities or the previous Rescue Coordinator can return to the position , Clovis Animal Welfare League will not be doing rescue work.
Backyard Breeders
Backyard breeders (BYB) are folks that simply let their dogs have puppies. In dog lover's circles they don't really qualify as a breeder. The dogs will do this on their own. BYB's typically advertise in the newspaper and know very little about the breed(s) of dogs they are selling. Most are only letting the dogs have puppies to sell to the first person that shows up with the money to buy the pup. Most times these BYB's have not tested for genetic illnesses like hip dysplasia, heart defects, thyroid problems, the list goes on. They just let the dogs breed at will without concern for their health or well being. If you buy from a BYB you will not have even a remote guarantee of the health and temperament of the puppy.
If you are looking to add a great purebred puppy from a responsible breeder most likely you will need to wait for a puppy to become available. Most responsible breeders have a waiting list for their puppies because they breed very carefully and not very often. When done properly, raising a litter of puppies is a lot of hard work. Many responsible breeders also rescue and may have an adult of the breed you are interested available for adoption. Please check the AKC site at www.akc.org to find a good breeder of nice dogs or purebred rescue.
