Fostering FAQ:

Q: What if I get too attached?
A: We know that animal lovers create strong bonds with pets in their care. You will have the option to adopt the pet if that is the only route possible for you, but keep in mind, the more you adopt the fewer you are able to help in the long run. Many of our fosters become peaceful with letting their beloved fosters go because we are SO selective on where their new home will be. We want the level of care to remain consistent so you don’t have to feel that “leaving your house” would mean any LESS in their quality of life.

Q: What if my foster animal gets sick?
A: PACA covers all medical for foster animals. If your animal becomes sick, contact your representative immediately and they will coordinate care thru pre-authorized medical facilities.

Q: What are my responsibilities as a foster parent?
A: We would like our foster homes to provide a loving environment with appropriate boundaries and limitations so as to create the most stable and peaceful experience for everyone involved. We will provide food if we have donated packages available; otherwise, we ask you to provide the food. The only other request is that you are available to transport the animal to any necessary vet appointments and to adoption clinic on Saturdays. If this is not convenient we can make other arrangements with PACA volunteers.

Q: Can I meet the new adopters?
A: Yes, as a foster parent you can be as involved or as un-involved as you feel comfortable with. If you would like to meet the potential adopters or accompany the PACA volunteer when they perform the home visit that can definitely be arranged. This helps fosters to be comfortable with the quality home their temporarily housed pets will ultimately occupy.

Q: What is the time commitment?
A: There is no contract or obligation on your part; however, the more fosters we have, the more lives we are able to save each year since we do not have a shelter facility. We request that you hold the foster animal until it gets adopted. At that point, it’s up to you if you want to take on another one right away, never again, or just take a little break.

Q: What if it doesn’t work out with the foster in my home or my own pets don’t get along with the new addition?
A: Rest assured, if you are encountering any problems with your foster animal we will make arrangements to pick it up immediately. We want fostering to be a positive experience for everyone involved, so you don’t have to feel obligated to keep a foster in your home if it isn’t working out.

Who We Are

The People's Anti-Cruelty Association (PACA) was founded in 1973 as a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue organization. It was created to provide a safe haven for homeless dogs until a permanent home was found. PACA is the oldest No-Kill animal rescue organization in the state of New Mexico. Albuquerque Animal Rescue (AAR) was created in 1992 as the community outreach division of the organization and added the rescue of cats to the venue. AAR focuses on the adoption phase of the animal rescue work. PACA/AAR relies on foster care to provide a safe, home type environment until a permanent home is found.

DO YOU NEED HELP WITH A FERAL CAT COLONY?
The next feral cat spay/neuter clinic is Sunday February 14. For info, or to borrow a trap for TNR (TRAP-NEUTER-RELEASE) call New Mexico Animal Friends at 881-7297 ext. 3, or email: pacacats@aol.com

ABOUT Kitty City:
PACA/AAR invites the public to partake in some relaxation therapy by stopping by Kitty City, New Mexico's first cageless cat adoption center, located at Clark's Pet Store, 11200 Menaul NE, to meet our available feline therapists. You just might find that life-long feline friend who's been waiting just for you. We generally have around a dozen cats and kittens lounging, romping and just looking adorable. Kitty City may be visited at any time during Clarks regular business hours. Adoption counselors are available every Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm.

Adopting a friend

Prospective pet-parents are asked to fill out an adoption questionnaire and are interviewed to ensure a good match. Adoption fees are $95 for cats and $125 for dogs (cash or personal check; sorry but we aren't set up to accept credit cards). All animals PACA/AAR offers for adoption have been spayed or neutered with shots current to the animal's age. Our adult cats are tested for feline leukemia and FIV. All of the dogs and cats have been microchipped.

If you would like to adopt an animal from PACA please call (505) 315 0004 or email us at pacacats@aol.com or pacadogs@aol.com or stop by one of the adoption clinics.

Volunteering

We are in great need of foster parents and volunteers. Fostering can be done with no long-term commitment, and it is a very rewarding experience. An animal stays at your home as long as you like, and you can return it at any time. On any Saturday, you can bring it to our adoption clinic. Fostering allows the animal to remain adapted to a home environment, and this makes the adjustment to a new home easier when they are adopted. Fostering is an easy and fun way to spend time with a cat or dog! If you would like to foster an animal or volunteer, please call or e-mail or stop by one of our adoption clinics. You can also download a Volunteer Application and bring it to us at one of our adoption clinics.
