INFORMATION ABOUT OUR RESCUE

The Second Chance Sato Rescue of Temple NH, is a growing group of dedicated individuals (would you like to join us?) in the Hillsborough County Area who have chosen to work exclusively with Second Chance Animal Rescue to find homes for "Sato's" (Puerto Rican slang for Street/Stray Dogs and pronounced "saw-toe") who are awaiting their "second chance".

Sato's tend to be mostly small to medium dogs, although you will find some of a larger size. Upon arrival, many are initially very shy and timid, but once they realize that life is good in New Hampshire and that they are no longer in jeopardy, their happy and true personalities surface as they settle in and begin to relax.

We are a United States 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, a New Hampshire Nonprofit Corporation and are licensed by the State of N.H. Department of Agriculture as an Animal Shelter Facility located in Temple, NH.

We are a "foster home" shelter, so all dogs in our care are living with families in the area which gives us the opportunity to best understand their personality within a home environment, allowing us to best match them with the proper family. Once a dog reaches our rescue, our foster home families and Director of Adoptions begin searching for the perfect match - a family who is "just right" and will give the pet a wonderful home. While waiting for their forever home, our dogs receive the best of care while in the 48 hour quarantine and with their foster familes.

All dogs have been spayed/neutered, and come fully vaccinated (DHLPP series, rabies, and bordatella), heartworm-tested based on age, and have been dewormed and on heartworm preventative. Each dog is seen by a local veterinarian the day before making their journey, and then see a licensed NH Veterinarian for a State of NH Health Certificate before they are adopted (compliance of NH Department of Agriculture regulations).

We work exclusively with
SECOND CHANCE ANIMAL RESCUE located in Villalba, Puerto Rico to find homes for stray dogs they have rescued.

They are a no kill, non-profit organization founded to help improve the quality of life of the animals in Puerto Rico dedicated toward improving the basic care and safety of the animals. As members of The Puerto Rican Federation of Animal Protectors, they work in conjunction with other organizations to achieve their common goals to help those that can't help themselves.

Their Mission is dedicated to the safety and well being of the animals. They rescue animals that are neglected, abused, abandoned or unwanted by their owners. A typical rescue includes a trip to the veterinarian for a complete health check-up which includes vaccinations, worming, heartworm check and spay or neuter. If there is a more serious condition they go the extra mile. At
S.C.A.R. , they rehabilitate the physically and emotionally distressed soul and find a good home that meets the requirements of Second Chance Animal Rescue both within Puerto Rico and the United States.

Please visit their web site
S.C.A.R. to gain a more detailed understanding of their rescue and see the dogs that are currently in their care and will soon be looking for homes.

ABOUT OUR DOGS & THE ADOPTION PROCESS

The first step in the adoption process is the completion and submission of an Adoption Application. Please download and save this application to your computer (Microsoft Word format), fill out out, and email it back to us as an attachment to secondchancesatoadoptions@gmail.com.

Please be sure to complete all sections of the application including Vet phone numbers as a vet review is a critical step in the process.

Stephanie, our Director of Adoptions will review the application and contact you. Our main objective is to find the best suitable home for each pet. We do not operate on a first come, first served basis, we take pride in matching the desires of the families to the needs of each pooch, and therefore phone interviews are an important phase of the process.

Once approved, a time will be set to meet the dogs that have been identified as adoptable to your family. If there is a match that is acceptable to the family and the rescue, the adoption can then take place at our licensed location. Our detailed adoption contract will be signed at that time.

Our Adoption Fee is $340.00 (which includes a transportation expense of $75.00 that is incurred to ship dogs from the island) and is non-refundable, to be paid in cash or check (no credit cards accepted at this time). The majority of the adoption fee is sent back to Second Chance Animal Rescue in Puerto Rico so they can continue their work to rescue animals and get them the proper medical care so they can be adoped to loving families.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Being a new rescue, we can use help in many ways, and although financial support is certainly well received, our primary need is to build our pool of volunteers and foster families.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER FOSTERING?

This is an extremely rewarding part of the rescue program. By fostering, we give the dogs a chance to settle in a stable and quieter environment than they have been accustomed to. Foster families help us by caring for them until they are adopted, taking updated pictures for posting to our site, and understanding their personalities so we can find the perfect match. Seeing the dog(s) you have cared for go to happy families knowing they have found someone to love them is the best reward. For the most part, we hope to have dogs in foster care for only a few weeks.

WHAT OTHER VOLUNTEER HELP IS NEEDED?

Quarantine Care - We also need help in caring for the dogs at our shelter during the 48 hour quarantine time when they arrive. This only takes a few hours over a few days once a month. Come help us feed, care for, and play with the pups during this time.

Events and Adoption Days - Consider helping us get the word out about our rescue. We need help at events being planned (fairs, community events, etc) and at Adoption Days at our shelter location.

Marketing and Advertising - Would you be interested in helping (or assisting) us create a brochure? Organizing and scheduling events?

Transportation - Getting the dogs here from Bradley Airport in Hartford CT can be a challenge. Would you be interested in volunteering to make the drive?

Donations - We can use crates, puppy pens, beddings (old towels bath towels are great), or anything else you may think of. We receive no local, state, or federal funding, our rescue is entirely dependant on contributions and adoption fees to cover it's annual operating budget.

Any talent in any area can help within a rescue, so bring any talents or interests to our attention. Please consider contacting Sandy, our Director of Volunteers by sending email to secondchancesatovolunteers@gmail.com

SUCCESS STORIES

GIZMO HAS MADE US PROUD!!!!

Hello Stephanie and Second Chance Sato Staff,

It was a year ago (Thanksgiving Weekend) that we adopted a little Shih-Tzu mix named Gizmo. I promised to send you a family picture last year after the Holidays but never got around to it. A lot has occurred over the past year. It has been a year of “firsts” for our family.

After having to put down our fifteen year old black lab named “Buddy” we were all devastated, especially my Dad. After some time went by we started looking for another dog for my Dad. I had looked on Petfinder for a longtime trying to find the right dog for my Dad. Dealing with the different adoption agencies was difficult and frustrating. But I kept looking, telling myself when it’s meant to be it will be. It became a daily ritual to look on Petfinder, scanning all the dog profiles to see which dog might be a match.

Last November I came across Gizmo’s profile on Petfinder. Gizmo did not strike me as cute but his profile and size seemed like it could be a match. I did not inquire about him immediately because the picture on Petfinder did not do him justice one bit. For some odd reason though I kept coming back to Gizmo’s picture and profile. I think it was Gizmo’s personality that grabbed my attention and made me eventually inquire about him. I was shocked at how responsive you all were to my requests. Stephanie contacted me immediately and Sabine’s emails from Puerto Rico about Gizmo’s personality were right on. The whole approval process was completed within a week. You all made it so easy. Finally… we had a dog for my Dad!

When we finally brought Gizmo home my Dad was in a rehabilitation center recovering from a two week hospitalization due to some problems with his blood pressure. We surprised my Mother with Gizmo and Gizmo took a liking to her immediately. We sent a picture of my mother holding Gizmo to my Dad’s cell phone. Within minutes the phone at my parent’s house was ringing. It was my Dad calling from the rehab and my Dad was giggling like a little kid. He couldn’t believe we had gotten a dog for him. He was thrilled!

The rehabilitation center allowed us to take Gizmo in to visit my Dad. Gizmo wasted no time showing my Dad how he could dance on is hind legs, act like a circus clown and how he enjoyed eating peanut butter crackers with my Dad! We took Gizmo in several times to the rehab to visit my Dad. Gizmo seemed to lift everyone’s spirits with his perky personality. My Dad couldn’t wait to come home and was finally released from the rehab the week after Thanksgiving.

My father enjoyed Gizmo’s company tremendously and Gizmo was constantly by my father’s side. When my father would play Sudoku, Gizmo would be right next him chewing on the pencil or chewing on the Sudoku book trying to get his attention. Gizmo would take the TV clicker, my Dad’s slippers, the kid’s mittens or hats, anything to be the center of attention. Gizmo’s antics would make him laugh and my Dad would forget about all his ailments. We all became very fond of Gizmo. Gizmo made friends with everyone he met!

On Christmas Eve last year while leaving a family party, my father collapsed in the driveway and went into respiratory and cardiac arrest. He was revived en route to the hospital and was placed on life support when he arrived at the hospital. When we finally returned home that night to my parent’s house I picked up Gizmo and all I could smell was my father’s cologne. I think we all held onto Gizmo a whole lot tighter during the following week. We were all devastated but remained optimistic.

On New Year’s Day we decided to remove my Dad from life support. There was no sign of improvement and the prognosis was not good. My father passed away with his family by his side during the evening on New Year’s Day. When we wrote my Dad’s eulogy everything seemed to come full circle. My Dad was very tech savvy and he had all the latest techno stuff. He always referred to his techno stuff as his gadgets and gizmos. Maybe that’s why I kept coming back to Gizmo’s profile on Petfinder. Whatever the reason, my Dad truly enjoyed every minute with his “Gizzy”. For weeks after my Dad’s passing my mother would find Gizmo on my Dad’s side of the bed digging at the blankets as if he was looking for my Dad. I think Gizmo missed my Dad too, like the rest of us.

This past year has been a year of firsts for my family, the first year without my Dad and the first year with Gizmo. Gizmo has been there to lick the tears from our eyes and do his little dance to make us laugh. Gizmo was a great companion to my Dad, but it has been my mother that has truly enjoyed Gizmo’s companionship over the past year as well as the rest of us.

I never did get a chance to get a picture of my Dad with Gizmo but attached are some pictures of the rest of us with Gizmo. Thank you for bringing Gizmo into our lives, he has been a joy to have!

Happy Holidays!

The Christie Family Millis, MA
