Who We Are

New Hampshire Humane Society(NHHS) is a private nonprofit agency located in Laconia, New Hamsphire. NHHS cares for over 2,000 homeless pets that arrive annually. These animals are stray, abandoned, abused and neglected. In addition to cats and dogs, we also receive and place rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and various other animals. Over 90 communities use our services, while police and animal control officers from nearly 23 towns contract with us to take care of their stray or lost animals. We are highly successful in placing animals in new homes, giving hundreds of them a second chance at life. We provide both adoption services and counseling to prospective onweners and members of our communities. We also provide lost and found services, cruelty investigations, outreach programs, membership programs, and volunteer programs.

Adopting a Friend

NHHS is highly successful in placing animals in new homes. We provide both adoption services and counseling. Prospective adopters are carefully screened to ensure loving and responsible homes for the animals. To assure all pets are placed in responsible and loving homes, prospective owners are required to complete a detailed application form. A minimum 24 hour waiting period is imposed so the applicant's background can be checked. Shelter workers encourage the prospective owners to use this time to be sure they are willing to accept the lifelong responsibility and commitment of pet ownership. There is a modest adoption fee for each animal. All animals are spay/neutered before completing the adoption. Go to www.nhhumane.org to complete an online adoption form for one of our animals.

Volunteering and Donations

Volunteer opportunities abound NHHS. From weekly services to year-round fundraising, our volunteers are incorporated throughout the system. Hands-on work with the animals includes socializating and/or foster home care. Data entry, mailings, education, public relations opportunities and other volunteer programs are arranged through the Volunteer Director. Donations support the shelter operations and programs at 1305 Meredith Center Road, Laconia, known throughout New England as a haven for abandoned animals. Thousands of people and animals find hope, care, concern and dignity at NHHS. Approximately 1,600 animals are left here every year, some neglected, abandoned, abused, stray- almost all frightened and in need. Please support NHHS animals; help us help them.
