Who We Are
"And homeless near a thousand homes I stood, and near a thousand tables pined and wanted food." ~ William Wordsworth
The Humane Society of Union County seeks to spread the word about the proper and humane care and treatment of animals, including spaying and neutering to help solve the problem of too many homeless animals, by offering information and educational resources to both adults and children.
Our goals also include the provision and ensurance of humane care and treatment for animals in dire situations. We seek to rescue and protect abused, lost and homeless animals, provide comfortable and loving foster homes and veterinary care when necessary, and find loving and caring forever homes for homeless animals.
The Humane Society of Union County is a nonprofit, charitable organization entirely dependent upon private donations and voluntary support from concerned citizens. We receive no tax dollars.
We are not affiliated with the Union County Animal Shelter, which is under the jurisdiction of the UC Sheriff's Dept. and is entirely supported with our tax dollars.
Adopting a Friend
"Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet." ~ Colette
All of our furry friends have been rescued from horrible situations. Some have been close to death in a shelter, some rescued from a certain demise on the streets, and some have had to leave a comfortable home due to unforeseen circumstances.
Please take the time for careful thought and consideration before applying to adopt any furry companion. The feelings of all the members of your family, both human and furry, should be considered before the decision is made. Any health concerns which could be affected by the presence of a pet should be addressed, such as allergies. Financial considerations should be made because all pets not only need food, toys and other necessities, but also periodic wellness visits to the vet and yearly vaccinations, including rabies vaccinations which are required by state law, vet care if they become sick, and possibly medical care later in life. It is a serious decision and a lifetime commitment, and should bring joy to everyone, including the new pet. All pets deserve to be happy ~ loved, respected, well cared for and kept safe from harm. They are, after all, a member of your family!
A completed adoption application is required before you will be considered for the adoption of any of our animals. You can find the adoption application at www.hs-uc.org.
All applications will be carefully screened. Vet and personal references will be called and the application discussed. We may also call you to ask a few more questions, and sometimes a home visit by a volunteer and the pet will be required before the decision is made. If you are selected to be the lucky parents of one of our lovely furry friends you will be required to sign an adoption agreement which includes an agreement to spay or neuter the pet if it hasn't already been done at the time of adoption. In most cases an adoption fee applies; the fee may vary (see specifics for each pet on the petfinder list). The adoption fees help us to provide tests, vaccinations, spay/neuter, and medical treatments when necessary for all the animals. It is a small price to pay for the love you will receive from your new friend!
