Who We Are
In 2009 Nash County Animal Shelter killed a average of 222 animals a month. We are working to decrease this number. The pets we post are fostered by our members and were rescued at the last minute before being put to death.
To see the animals in the Nash County Animal Shelter, please search by zip code 27856. This is a kill shelter and the animals posted are at risk of death. Please see if you can find one to love at the Shelter.
Nash County Animal Friends is a volunteer group. Our primary goal is to have no animal leaving the shelter unless they are spayed/neutered, reducing the number of unwanted animals. We wish to stop the cycle of animal overpopulation. Spay and Neuter is our Mantra!
We also wish to increase the adoptions from the shelter by promotion and extended adoption hours. At present, we are in the midst of working with the Nash County administration to allow us to work in the Shelter and to be open for adoptions on Saturday.
We have a Community Outreach Program, in which we educate and, once funds are available, give grants to have low income families have their animals spay/neutered. We have arranged to have a low-cost spay/neuter clinic come to our county.
We do foster some pets. Once they have all their immunizations and have been spay/neutered (unless they are too young), we will offer them for adoption. We also post other rescued pets of friends, but they must be UTD on immunizations and spay/neutered.
The pets you see posted on our list are being fostered by members. Please check to see if there is a special number to call (or an email address) in the pet description you are interested in. If listed, please contact the foster parent direct.
Adopting a Friend
Nash County Animal Friends does have an adoption process, so if you want an application please email us or download from our website. We do ask for vet references and will conduct a home visit (with the pet) to make sure that our foster pet and you would be a good fit. We do ask that all of your cats and dogs be neutered or spayed if you wish to be considered (unless there is a medical reason). Our Adoption Fee will be listed on the pet's description.
We Can Help You Adopt from the Nash County Animal Shelter!
We offer adoption assistance for the animals in the Nash County Animal Shelter. They are only open for adoptions M-F, 1-4pm. We know that it is difficult for working people to be there during that time. We can help. Contact us for more details.
