We also have three adoptable pets featured weekly in the Jefferson Post. Jefferson Post
Ashe County Humane Society is a fledgling organization that was started in March, 2004 by a small group of individuals. In the time period from 2004 to present the group has started an adoption program, spay/neuter program and purchased a small facility to use as a Pet Resource Center. We are funded solely by donations and fundraisers. The office, spay/neuter clinics, Adoption Saturday's and all fundraisers are run by volunteers.
Our hope is to someday provide the county with an Adoption Center with permanent kennels and cat facilities. We allow local residents to bring dogs, cats and litters of kittens and puppies to the Resource Center on Saturday's in order to find them a home. Owners are required to pick up the animals not adopted at the end of the day. They may bring the pets back on subsequent Saturday's until they are adopted. All pets are featured on our website and advertised in the local newspapers. Our adoption rate is approximately 60%.
We also have a small foster program for animals that have been abandoned. We will also take pets that owners can no longer keep into our foster program. Unfortunately, we are unable to foster all animals who deserve a forever home. Until we have a facility that can house animals until they are adopted, we are dependent on good samaritans who offer to help us in our foster effort.
Our fees are as follows
Female Dog - $80
Male Dog - $70
Female Cat - $65
Male Cat - $45
When possible, all foster animals are up-to-date on shots and spay/neuter if they have reached the appropriate age. Pets brought to the center by current owners may not have had appropriate vaccinations.
