Dogstown Coonhound Rescue Dogstown Coonhound Rescue

Dogstown Coonhound Rescue has gradually accumulated many elderly and disabled dogs over the last ten years, so we are forced to take a break from active rescue while we see these wonderful pals through their last years. We still offer our website and Petfinder page to dogs in need, and we help with referrals whenever we can. Don't hesitate to contact us for help but please know that we cannot take in any more dogs for the immediate future. We seem to have worked our way into being more of a dog sanctuary for a period of time. Food, veterinary care, preventatives, and medicines for aging dogs all cost money, so your donations are most welcome and of course are tax-deductible. We are a Federally registered 501(c)(3) charity, since 2002. Donations can be sent to our Dogstown PayPal account at gifts@dogstown.org or mailed to us at Dogstown, PO Box 5811, Statesville, NC 28687. We are also a listed North Carolina charity with Donation Line, Llc (http://www.donationline.com) where you can donate the proceeds of the sale of your car to the charity of your choice. We have gotten several donations in the last year that way and they have been most helpful toward some of these old girls and boys, especially for medicines and teeth. Think of us, won't you, if you have a car to sell and want to donate the proceeds to charity.
Dogstown Coonhound Rescue (Dogstown.org) is a private dog rescue and sanctuary located in the foothills of North Carolina. We concentrated on Coon Hounds but have also taken in other breeds when room was available and we were called upon to help. Some of our current sanctuary dogs are blind, some deaf, some physically and psychologically crippled by abuse. Most were pulled from shelters, puppy mills, or simply found by someone tossed out on the road. Most are older dogs now, living out their days in peace on our acreage. In placing rescued pets, we have come (through experience) to recognize that people want pets that are friendly, little work, and quickly adjust to their new surroundings. Dogs that have been abused or poorly socialized to humans or family or household life are extremely hard to place. The sad fact is that for every dog who finds a happy home here in America, there are four or five who will never know anything of the kind. They will instead be thrown away to live short, miserable lives. The flood of dogs to be rescued and placed in America is staggering, and quickly overwhelms any individual or organization that takes up the endless task of finding them homes. It inevitably makes a rescuer particular about who is accepted into the rescue process -- dogs who need more than minimal care and consideration need sanctuary more than anything else, need time and space and kindness and safety to even become themselves. They are seen as less adoptable by the general public, and are harder to place in good homes. They need exceptional homes, and those are harder to come by. Dogstown Coonhound Rescue (Dogstown.org) only works with pet quality dogs for placement. None of the dogs we place are meant for breeding, hunting or show. Every dog we place must also be to homes where they will be indoor/outdoor dogs - a member of the family, not an outdoor, outcast animal fenced or chained in the yard. Many of them have spent their days in outdoor kennels and cages, and have had enough of that!
The minimum adoption fee/donation for purebred dogs and puppies is $150.00. The minimum donation for mixed breeds is $75 to $100 depending on the reliability of the mix and what expenses we have had to incur for the dog's care. Some dogs need minimal veterinary inspection and shots; some need extensive help, treatment and even surgery. Donations of are always appreciated. A portion of adoption donations are tax deductible and are not intended to cover expenses for the individual dog. But all other donations are fully tax-deductible and you will receive a receipt in the mail to verify your donation. The adoption fee scale is set solely on what is charged for adoptions by other rescue and animal welfare groups. Sometimes ex-hunting dogs and strays are timid and need extra time and attention to completely relax and acclimate to family life. The process for adoption is as follows: Application submission, reference checks, phone interview, home check, 3-week trial adoption period and final adoption. We only speak with prospective applicants about the dog(s) they are interested in after the application has been submitted and approved. Applicants must be 18 or over. If other adults live in the home they must endorse the application as well, and the phone interview must include all adults in the adoptive household. It never works out for one member of the family to invite a dog into everyone's living space.
