Pet of the Month

News

Dog's Town has many elderly dogs now so we are taking a break from active rescue to see these wonderful dogs through their last years. However, we still offer our website to dogs in need and help with referrals when we can. Dont hesitate tocontact us for help but please know that we will not be taking in any more dogs indefinitely. Coonhounds have such a hard time finding homes, especially these days. They are such lovely dogs and can be so even tempered, but so few realize this about them. They may not be "chic" but they are one of the best breeds for families. There are so many of them, wont you open your heart and give one a chance? There are many in shelters all over the country, especially in the south, and very few rescuing them. Food, veterinary care, preventatives all cost money even though the dogs here now are too old to be adopted. So your donations are most welcome and are tax-deductible. They can be sent to Dog's Town Coonhound Rescue by mail or via PayPal. For PayPal, use the our email address, dogstown@bellsouth.net or for snail mail, see below for the address. We are also a charity listed with Donation Line, where you can donate the proceeds of the sale of your car to the charity of your choice on their list. We have gotten several donations in the last year that way and they have been most helpful. Think of, us wont, you if you have a car to sell and want to donate the proceeds to charity.

Who We Are

Dog's Town Coonhound Rescue is a private rescue and sanctuary located in the foothills of North Carolina for Coonhounds, Coonhound mixes and some dogs of other breeds that have found themselves lost or abandoned in shelters or on the road. Many of the coonhounds that end up in shelters or abandoned are either gun-shy, not prey-oriented enough or were used as breeding stock. However, they make great pets once their hunting and breeding days have concluded. They have beautiful relaxed temperaments, even as puppies. They are scent hounds and will tend to roam so a securely fenced yard is essential. We will consider a home without a fence but lean strongly toward those that have fenced in property - an outdoor kennel is not appropriate for a coonhound nor does it substitute for a medium to large fenced in yard. However, some coonhounds are impossible to fence in and can only be walked on leash when out of doors for their safety. Here at Dog's Town we try to ascertain that before adopting out any coonhound. All of the dogs at Dog's Town are pet quality only - none are for breeding, hunting or show. All dogs placed by Dog's Town Coonhound Rescue will live in homes where they will be indoor/outdoor dogs - a member of the family. Many of them have spent their days in outdoor kennels and have had enought of that! After all, "holding furniture down" is one of their favorite pasttimes and greatest skills. They all leave Dog's Town altered and as fully vetted as time and age allow. We here at Dog's Town hope that you will consider a Coonhound the next time you are looking for an addition to your family. Dog's Town also takes in the occasional mixed breed dog, even unrelated to the coonhound. Keep checking for the other dogs we have in rescue. We also list other coonhounds and hound mixes that are in shelters or are being fostered in other locations.

Adopting a friend

The minimum adoption fee/donation for pure bred dogs and puppies is $150.00. The minimum donation for mixed breeds is $75 to $100 depending on the reliability of the mix and what expenses we have had to incur for the dog's care. Donations of more are always appreciated. A portion of adoption donations are tax deductible and are not intended to cover expenses for the individual dog. But all other donations are fully tax-deductible and you will receive a receipt in the mail to verify your donation. The adoption fee scale is set soley based on what is charged for adoptions by other rescue and animal welfare groups. Sometimes ex-hunting dogs and strays are timid and need extra time and attention to completely relax and acclamate to family life. The process for adoption is as follows: Application submission, reference checks, phone interview, home check, 3-week trial adoption period and final adoption. We only speak with prospective applicants about the dog(s) they are interested in after the application has been submitted and approved. All long distance calls will be returned collect. Applicants must be 18 or over. If other adults live in the home they must endorse the application as well and the phone interview must include all adults in the adoptive household.
