Who We Are

Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center is located in Concord, North Carolina. We are one of five youth development centers with a pet therapy program in the state. We are a secured, juvenile facility that houses adjudicated male (youth) offenders as young as 10 years old and up to 21 years of age.

Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center's Pet Therapy Program was started in 1992 by one of our psychologist and several other employees and volunteers. The purpose of the program is to bring animals and youths together to bring about a positve change. The program teaches responsibility, teamwork, iimprove social skills, empathy, educational/vocational skills, human-animal bonding, and unconditional love.

All of our dogs that we currently have in the program came to us as puppies from various places such as rescue centers, breeders, and through veterinarian clinics.

We are a not-for-profit program. We are state funded through the Department of Juvenile Justice and through grants. However, we do get donations from businesses and indivuals in the community.

If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please feel free to call us to set up an appointment Monday-Friday, 7:30-4:30pm at 704-786-9163 Ext. 395. (WE DO NOT ACCEPT CATS OR ADOPT THEM OUT)
